He is the author of the short and medium story collection "Lights at Night", "Night Duck Stop Calling", essay collection "Great Lake News", "The World is Deep as the Sea", "Things in Time", and the long children's novel "Song on the Island".

Shen Nian was born and raised on the shore of Dongting Lake, and water was originally the spiritual element in his life. "Great Lake News" records Shen Nian's observations and thoughts on more than 100 visits to the wetlands of East Dongting Lake and the integrated island of the Yangtze River in the past 20 years. The author has counted the fates of migratory birds, fish, elk, finless porpoises and other creatures in the changing times, meticulously presents the complex entanglement of people and things in the Dongting Lake area, depicts the past and new appearance of the Great Lake to people, and shows the humanistic care of an ecological activist. "Great Lakes News" was published by Beiyue Literature and Art Publishing House in December 2021, and excerpts of works were published in the first issue of People's Literature in 2022.
Shi Zhanjun, secretary of the Secretariat of the China Writers Association and editor-in-chief of the People's Literature Magazine, believes that the author not only writes about the ecological features on the edge of the Great Lake, but also writes about a sense of life. The author brings a certain new form to ecological literature, which is a fusion of natural elements and social reality factors. Whether it is writing about wind objects, writing about plants and animals related to water, including writing about oneself and relatives, there is a certain way of life.
He Xiangyang, director of the Innovation and Research Department of the China Writers Association, said that the works show how human beings should be in the process of modernization, whether it is natural literature, ecological literature, or animal protection literature, and finally settled in literature. On the question of how to write reality, Shen Nian provides a very unique perspective.
