IIHS announces safety recommendation list, Hyundai Group becomes the big winner?

The Highway Safety Insurance Association of the United States announced the list of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ safety recommendations in 2022, and a total of 65 new cars received TPS+ recommendations, and 36 TSPs. Compared with last year's TSP+ 49 vehicles and TSP 41 vehicles, this year has made significant progress in both quality and quantity. Hyundai Group is arguably the biggest winner, with Hyundai, Kia and Genesis winning a total of 21 recommended lists.

In October 2021, IIHS introduced stricter side impact specifications, and only the Mazda CX-5 suvs tested in the current period received a "Good" score, which also led to fewer cars that could be selected for TPS+ and TSP recommendations. However, this year, the car factory should improve the new specifications, so not only the total number of recommended cars has increased from 90 to 101, but the number of cars with the highest rating of TSP+ has increased significantly from 49 to 65.

Hyundai Group's Hyundai, Kia and Genesis performed the best, with 21 vehicles on the recommended list, including 11 TSP+. They are Hyundai Tucson, Palisade, Santa Fe, Nexo; Kia K5, Stinger; Genesis G70, G80, G90, GV70 and GV80. It can be seen that there are many SUVs, which is because the 2022 TSP+ and TSP evaluations still follow the old side impact test specifications, taking modern Tucson as an example, last year's use of the new collision measurement standard only obtained a "Marginal" score, which did not meet the necessary conditions of TSP+.

To be the 2022 TSP recommendation, the vehicle under test must be "Good" in six IIHS impact tests, with a vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-person forward impact prevention system that achieves an "Advanced" or "Superior" score as standard. While headlights are not required as standard, automakers should at least offer an optional set of headlamps that can achieve "Good" or "Acceptable". To get TSP+, the standard headlamp must pass the "Good" or "Acceptable" standard.

But the good times may also be 2022, it is expected that from 2023, IIHS will introduce a new version of the impact test specification, in addition to the impact speed increased from 50km/h to 60km/h, the weight of the obstacle will also increase from 1,497 kg to 1,896 kg, TSP+ and TSP in this project threshold will also be changed to "Good" or "Accetable". Not only that, but the TSP+ conditions also add a night pedestrian impact prevention test, at least to score "Advanced" or "Superior" score to pass.
