Are left-handed smarter? A lot of people think wrong, the truth is...

In our view, the habit of using the right hand should be an innate ability, a normal habit of human life.

However, there are some capable people in life who break the rules and prefer the left hand.

They write with their left hand

How are left-handed people formed?

There are currently different "versions" of the causes of left-handedness.

Studies from genetics have shown that the formation of left-handed people is controlled by genes. As to whether it is related to a gene called LRRTMI or to a whole gene, there is no clear theory [1].

However, a survey of left-handed households shows that left-handed parents, especially those who are both left-handed, are indeed more likely to have their children becoming left-handed than right-handed parents, up to 26% of the time [2].

However, current data show that only a quarter of left-handed people are affected by genetic factors, and the remaining three-quarters are actually more closely related to the acquired living environment and hand habits [3].

For example, when a child is born with tools or other activities for a long time, there is a division of labor between the two hands. When doing some daily necessary activities, such as holding chopsticks, spoons, holding toys and other small objects, when holding a pen, children may more often use one of these hands, which is called "dominant hand".

Coupled with the guidance of parents and the child's super ability to imitate, these are important factors that lead to the formation of acquired left-handedness.

Some scholars believe that the hand raised near the mouth during fetal development becomes a "sharp hand", and if the raised hand is the left hand, it is left-handed after birth [4].

Of course, there are also studies that have linked left-handedness to factors such as cerebral hypoxia, birth pressure, and maternal age [5].

In short, there are many theories about the causes of left-handedness, and the mainstream view is that genetic and acquired environmental factors work together, but there is no clear and unified conclusion.

Second, is left-handedness bad for children?

"Is your child left-handed?" How troublesome it will be to go to school in the future! ”

"Take advantage of the fact that the child is small, quickly change it!"

"When I was a child, I was left-handed, and I was beaten once with my left hand, and my family pulled it hard..."

Although they are extremely envious of the "divine operation" of left-handed people on weekdays and feel that they are gifted, parents are worried when they hear the comments of relatives and friends:

Will left-handedness go against the normal growth trajectory of children?

Most of the tools in life are designed according to the habits of the right hand, will it bring inconvenience to children?

Will it be ridiculed or ostracized by other children, affecting mental health?

Third, is left-handed really bad for the baby?

Of course not!

The so-called left and right-handed people are actually a habit of using hands formed by everyone's long-term life, and as far as the current research is concerned, it has not found a large difference between left-handed and right-handed people.

In addition, many people believe in the statement that "left-handed people have high IQs", but this is just a beautiful lie!

A large population study involving more than 60,000 people showed that the IQ difference between left-handed and right-handed people was almost negligible [6]. So, stop saying left-handed or right-handed is smarter.

Fourth, how to treat the "little left-handers" at home

1. Go with the flow and don't have to force corrections

Habits cannot be formed in a day or two, and likewise, it is not a day to get rid of a habit. If parents continue to force the baby to use the right hand, instead of achieving the expected purpose, it will cause harm and frustration to the baby, thereby reducing the child's enthusiasm and even rebellious psychology.

Therefore, the best way is to conform to the nature of children, believe in them, use the left hand is not worse than the right hand, eat the same, writing and learning ability is the same.

2. Give your child enough respect and understanding

Children who are accustomed to using their left hand will not feel that there is anything wrong with them.

However, when he finds himself different from the people around him, he may be confused, and if ridiculed, the young mind is vulnerable.

If the parents do not give proper understanding at this time, but instead accuse the child, it will make the child's psychology suffer a second heavy blow.

Therefore, parents should give their children enough understanding and care to tell him:

"The baby will use his left hand to hold things, the mother will not, you are very powerful!"

"Children laugh at you, because they don't know that the left hand and the right hand can be used to take chopsticks and take things!"

3. Create a "left hand" environment for your baby

For babies who are obviously left-handed, parents should take the initiative to create a good "left-handed" environment for them. Like what:

When eating, leave room for the baby to eat with his left hand;

When decorating the room for the baby, toys, bookshelves and other items should be placed on the left-hand side as much as possible;

When entering the kindergarten, you can inform the teacher in advance, let the teacher line the baby to the left position, avoid collision between the arm and other children's arms in the classroom, and also reduce the misunderstanding of other children about left-handed people, so as to avoid the baby being snubbed and teased.

In addition, you can also specially buy some left-hand supplies for the baby, such as left-handed children's scissors, etc., to facilitate the baby's use.

4. Find opportunities and move your right hand appropriately

The brain of the human body is divided into two parts, the left brain mainly dominates the right half of the body, and the right brain mainly dominates the left half of the body. Parents of left-handed babies can guide their babies to learn to do something with their right hand, and babies who are accustomed to using their right hands can also guide their babies to learn to use their left hands, thereby promoting brain development [7].

For example, when the baby eats, you can encourage the baby more, "If the baby will hold chopsticks in both hands, it will be even more powerful, should the baby try it?" ”

Are left-handed smarter? A lot of people think wrong, the truth is...

In short, left-handedness is neither synonymous with "prodigy" nor will it affect children's future life and learning, and parents do not have to be too anxious.

Each of us is a different, extraordinary individual, and the left-hander is like a gift from Heaven to a child. Only by recognizing and appreciating the "difference" of children can children grow up healthily.

Of course, there is one more thing that can be very detrimental for left-handed star people, and hopefully you will never meet...
