On February 17, the BMW Group officially unveiled the "THE 8 X JEFF KOONS Limited Collector's Edition" model, which it has designed in collaboration with the famous pop artist Jeff Koons. The model is based on the new BMW 8 Series four-door coupe and is limited to 99 units worldwide.

As the representative of BMW's large luxury car, the new BMW 8 Series combines a dazzling design, outstanding sportsmanship and luxury.
Mr. Chiptzer, Chairman of the BMW Group, said: "The BMW Group is always looking for new challenges, and the cooperation with Jeff Koons has inspired each of us, whether it is our colleagues at headquarters or in various factories. In terms of design, the 'THE 8 X JEFF KOONS Limited Edition' is one of the most laborious models in the history of the BMW Group. As a 'galloping work of art', it will not only be displayed as a valuable collection in the museum, but also as a true BMW, flying on the roads of countries around the world. ”
Artist Jeff Koons said: "This BMW 8 Series is my own dream car! I've always wanted to create a collectible BMW car that blends sporty passion with minimalist style. I can't wait to experience the driving experience of this four-door coupe. All the lines on the model gradually become larger from the front of the car to the rear of the car, combined with the 'POP!' on the body. Together with the steam thrust design elements, they visually create a sense of constant acceleration forward. Blue seems to be a vast cosmic space. I wanted to build a car that knew no borders so that people could think about how people relate to each other and how they relate to everything around us. The driver and all passengers will experience further pleasure, which is why I designed this car. ”
Craftsmanship
Nearly 300 hours of multi-layer coating
In terms of exterior design, the eye-catching colour combination of the THE 8 XJEFF KOONS limited edition is confident and expressive. The body blends 11 different exterior colors from blue to silver and from yellow to black, showing a gorgeous and exaggerated pop art atmosphere. The limited-edition collector's model is the embodiment of exquisite craftsmanship, with 285 hours of painstaking polishing required for multi-layer painting on each car, and engineers at the BMW Group's Dingefing and Landshut plants often need to use magnifying glasses for coloring, which also makes the new car only two per week.
As one of the most complex components of THE 8 XJEFF KOONS technology, the tailgate requires 7 different colors and 12 layers of paint, while the total thickness of the paint is less than 250 microns, which is only the thickness of two human hairs.
How to present the artist's graphic design on the surface of the three-dimensional vehicle is a great challenge for the spraying process, the engineer uses special computer programs and laser projection technology, lasers project the design pattern onto the corresponding body parts in a linear projection manner to ensure the accuracy of each spray detail. The contour lines between each layer of paint are carefully drawn by hand by high-level craftsmen with many years of experience. In order to meet the tactile and optical challenges brought about by the multi-color paint surface, the engineers at the BMW Group Landshut plant have also developed a "multi-color" process for this limited edition model, which better meets the requirements of this model for the ultimate craftsmanship.
The overall design of the vehicle is dynamic and powerful, incorporating elements of pop art and undermining the shape of the BMW 8 Series coupe in geometric shape. The exploding lines at the rear of the car pay homage to the artist in the 2010 BMW Art Car. "POP!" on the body Elements and design elements of steam thrust symbolize the speed and power of the BMW 8 Series.
In the interior section, the collector's exclusive logo and the artist's engraved signature cup holder lid highlight the extraordinary taste, and the seat is composed of striking red and blue elements, which are not only the colors of the superheroes in the anime, but also the colors of the high-performance brand BMW M.
"Every THE 8 XJEFF KOONS limited edition model embodies the efforts of dozens of engineers and designers, allowing the artist's concept to be fully embodied in the finished product," Says Chiptzer. ”
Jeff Koons himself visited the Dingeffing factory several times to discuss design with relevant personnel. "I've always been thinking deeply, what's at the heart of the BMW 8 Series coupe," he says. What is the core of strength? How can we create a work that not only expresses the power and power that the BMW 8 Series already has, but also moves people's hearts? ”
Each "THE 8 X JEFF KOONS Limited Edition" model has a certificate signed by artist Jeff Koons and CHAIRMAN of the BMW Group, Mr. Chiptzer, which includes the vehicle identification number of each car to highlight the sense of honor and scarcity of this artwork.
Using the car as the carrier
Express the identity of the brand in an artistic way
When it comes to BMW art cars, most people associate BMW with world-famous artists, including Jeff Koons and Cao Fei. Since the birth of the first BMW art car in 1975, the BMW Group has launched 19 BMW art cars, created by 19 global artists based on contemporary BMW racing cars, collector's sports cars and production models. Although the artists' creative methods are different, and the design styles of the art models they create are also very different, through their exquisite artistic creations, these racing cars, collector's sports cars and mass production models are all artistically expressed in a subtle way, which is very visually appealing.
As the core of the BMW Group's global cultural activities, the BMW Art Car Project uses the automobile as the carrier to convey the passionate and creative brand characteristics with artistic techniques, reflecting BMW's continuous innovation and pursuit of pure driving fun, as well as the unique artistic appreciation as a luxury brand.
