With the launch of 22H2 or Sun Valley 2, Windows 11 will usher in another visual change. One of the most useful and popular tools, Task Manager, is being updated with a fluid design and WinUI to make it more consistent with other new design methods of the operating system.

Microsoft has been working on the redesigned Task Manager for several months, and it's in the early stages of development, so it doesn't currently contain many modern design changes. The new design of Task Manager uses WinUI, which builds on top of the existing Win32 framework.

In other words, Microsoft doesn't plan to build Task Manager from scratch in the UWP. The company plans to incorporate new themes for Windows 11 into the existing Task Manager and add support for some new features, such as dark mode and a dedicated settings page to help users manage certain features.

In addition to dark mode, one obvious difference is the adoption of a new layout to accommodate options such as process, performance, disk, GPU, network, etc.

Microsoft has removed the tabbed interface and replaced it with a more touch-friendly burger menu. Where the existing tabbed interface buttons are located, you will find a new command bar with options such as "New Task", "End Task" and so on.

Microsoft has moved other advanced options to the new settings page in Task Manager.

As you can see in the screenshot, options such as "Default Start Page", "Real-time Update Speed", and "Window Management" have been moved to the settings page for easy access.

Similarly, Windows 11's flagship theme, Mica, is also evident. Mica Mica material allows Task Manager to incorporate Windows themes and desktop wallpaper into the background of the application.

Of course, the task manager's context menu has also been updated to a rounded UI.

Task Manager now supports efficiency mode

Microsoft is also testing a new "efficiency model" for Task Manager. Formerly known as "Eco Eco Mode", the latest features of Task Manager allow users to control the power consumption of each running process.

You can start efficiency mode from the new command bar on the Processes page. Or you can right-click on the process. Efficiency mode works on a per-process basis, so it does not apply to the entire group of processes.

As the name suggests, efficiency mode allows you to minimize the use of resources for a particular process without affecting the performance of the entire operating system. However, it can cause stability issues with link processes, so Microsoft has disabled the option for all local applications and internal processes.

Because Windows Task Manager is still under development, much of the new Task Manager uses elements of the legacy Task Manager. Many old elements are pasted into new ones, so it doesn't look good when you go through pages like details, launch apps, etc.
