Old photo: Hiroshima, Japan, after the atomic bombing in 1945, is devastated
Founded in 1589, Hiroshima is located southwest of the Japanese island of Honshu and was rebuilt in 1958 after being destroyed by the American atomic bomb in World War II. As the first city in the world to be severely damaged by the atomic bomb, Hiroshima built the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park at the site of the atomic bombing to pray for eternal peace.
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. Army Air Force B-29 Superfortress bomber "Enoragai" dropped a nuclear weapon "Little Boy" on Hiroshima. The bomber was specially modified to carry atomic bombs. An estimated 71,379 civilians were killed in the incident, and Hiroshima suffered great damage. This was the second explosion of an atomic bomb and the first time it was applied to military operations.
