All winter sports enthusiasts want to know where in the world it snows the most. Will it be Canada, the United States, Russia, Finland...?

It turns out that the three cities with the most snowfall (recorded) in the world are in Japan, and they are Aomori, Sapporo, and Toyama.

Aomori came in first, followed by Sapporo and Toyama. Two of them have an average of near or more than 6 meters of snow per year.

The ranking was published by the U.S.-based company Accurate Weather Forecast, which provides commercial weather forecasting services around the world. The company analyzed snowfall levels in all cities with a population of more than 100,000.

Aomori City (667 cm of snowfall per year)

Aomori City, the capital of Aomori Prefecture, has a population of about 280,000. It is located at the northernmost tip of the Japanese island of Honshu, between the Hakkoda Mountains and the edge of Mutsu Bay.

The average annual snowfall in Aomori City, as stated by the Japan Meteorological Agency, is 667 cm. The company "Accurate Weather Forecast" gave a higher value, at 792 centimeters.

The city is famous for its Yubuta festivals, while the Sannouchi Maruyama ruins offer a large collection of historical artifacts from the early to mid-Jomon period.

Aomori Prefecture is also the apple kingdom of Japan, and more than half of the country's apple production comes from this prefecture.

Sapporo City (annual snowfall 597 rin rice)

The annual snow cover in Sapporo City (Hokkaido Island) averages more than 5 meters. This Japanese city proudly embraces its natural conditions and hosts events such as the Sapporo Snow Festival. It also has excellent ski slopes and even hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics.

The company "Accurate Weather Forecast" awarded Sapporo the second place in "the city with the most snow in the world". The Japan Meteorological Agency gave Sapporo an average of 597 centimeters of snowfall over the past 30 years, while accurate weather forecasting companies have lower data of 485 centimeters.

Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972 and has since become one of Japan's most prestigious tourist destinations, along with Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Sapporo is famous for its extremely neat cityscape.

Many Japanese say Sapporo is the ideal city they most want to move to, and a gateway to the many travelers who want to start their adventures on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island.

Toyama City (average annual snowfall 383 cm)

In third place is The city of Toyama, located in the central region of Japan (Honshu Island), with a population of about 415,000 people.

In addition to being one of the cities with the most snow in Japan, Toyama City is also one of the cities with the newest infrastructure in the country, as the city was almost completely destroyed during World War II.

The company Accurate Weather Forecast gives an average annual snowfall of 363 centimeters, but the Japan Meteorological Agency gives to Toyama an average annual snowfall of 383 centimeters between 1981 and 2010.

Toyama is famous for its 300-year-old Ovara Wind Basin Festival and delicious seafood caught from Toyama Bay.
