In 1955, 26-year-old Zhou Changgu won the gold medal at the "Fifth World Youth and Student Peace and Friendship Festival" held in Warsaw, Poland with his Chinese painting "Two Lambs", which marked the rise of "Zhejiang School Figure Painting". Zhou Changgu, as one of the founders of the "Zhejiang School of Figure Painting", created pure and beautiful freehand figure paintings with his unique painting style and bold and rich colors, and left a strong mark in the history of Chinese art with his comprehensive talent in poetry, calligraphy, painting and gold and stone art.
Zhou Changgu (1929-1986), known as Laogu, was born in Yueqing, Zhejiang. He graduated from the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1953, and later served as an associate professor and professor at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and vice chairman of the Zhejiang Branch of the Chinese Artists Association. His work "Two Lambs" won the gold medal of the 1955 World Youth Festival.
Zhou Changgu also has a deep love for Huang Binhong's art. At that time, Mr. Huang was 85 years old when he returned to Hangzhou from Beijing to teach, so he rarely went to school. Zhou Changgu has only seen Mr. Huang's creative process three times, but he deeply feels that Mr. Huang's painting theory and techniques have greatly influenced him. In his later works, he felt that "his technique has improved by leaps and bounds".
Zhou Changgu once said, "My teachers Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, and Lin Fengmian, I admire them so much. He has been with Pan Tianshou for a long time, and he has been most influenced by him and benefited the most. "Mr. Pan's paintings are purely from the Eight Universities and Qingteng all the way down, and he is a painter who absorbs the Eight Majors without being confined by the Eight Majors. He is the successor of literati painting. Pan Tianshou also admires Zhou Changgu, saying, "I have only taught two talented students in my life. One is Zheng Zuwei and the other is Zhou Changgu. ”
However, fate was not lenient on him. He died prematurely at the age of 57, and his whole life has experienced great changes in the times, and there are few years of quiet creation. But when he devotes himself to creation, the characters and flowers he paints are bright and colorful, which makes people sigh. Presumably, those images of young girls can give him emotional comfort that he can't get in real life. It's a kind of reward that art gives to those who love it!
His insistence on art is touching, "How to be born, how to be artistic." Born in Si, art in Si, in truth, goodness and beauty. Although his life is bleak, he has always adhered to the purpose of pursuing truth, goodness and beauty in art, and this spirit is even more admirable!
After hearing that his hometown Yandang Mountain had established a memorial hall for him, the famous painter Lu Yanshao happily wrote an inscription: "Outstanding people are enough to add color to the famous mountain." With the brush in his hand, Zhou Changgu left a glorious chapter in the history of Chinese art.
