Early life experience
Yuan Longping was born in Beijing in 1930, and in the following years, Mr. Yuan Longping followed his parents to settle in Beiping, Jiujiang, Jiangxi, Ganzhou, Jiangxi, and Hankou, Hubei.
Because he often changed places of residence, Yuan Longping transferred to three schools in primary school alone, and studied at Hankou Rotary Primary School, Hunan Hongyi Primary School, Chongqing Longmenhao Central Primary School, and also changed several middle schools during junior high school.
Although he often changed schools, it did not affect Yuan Longping's studies at all, not only that, but Mr. Yuan Longping was also an athlete in high school.
In 1947, Yuan Longping won the first place in the men's 100-meter freestyle in the Hankou competition area and the second place in the men's 100-meter freestyle in Hubei Province when he was a freshman in high school.
In 1951, Yuan Longping signed up for the army at the Southwest Agricultural College, and passed the physical examination and political examination, just because the college students needed to participate in economic construction, they did not enlist in the army, and continued to stay in school to study.

In the early 60s of the 20th century, China suffered a natural disaster for three years, when China was in the midst of famine, Mr. Yuan Longping saw people fall on the road because of hunger, and since then Mr. Yuan Longping vowed to use agricultural science to defeat hunger.
However, Mr. Yuan's research path was not smooth at first.
After graduating in 1953, Mr. Yuan Longping was assigned to teach in the agricultural school, and in 1960, during his employment, Yuan Longping accidentally discovered a special trait of rice in the experimental field of the agricultural school, and according to his research, Yuan Longping confirmed that this rice was a pure natural hybrid rice.
With this discovery, Mr. Yuan Longping thought that since nature can grow natural hybrid rice, artificial breeding of hybrid rice should be a feasible plan.
He then artificially removed the male flowers of the dioecious rice and gave pollen to another variety to try to make a hybrid.
At that time, he was facing a severe famine, and Mr. Yuan Longping was determined to use agricultural science to save the people in the famine.
In the following two years, from 1964 to 1965, Yuan Longping and his research team conducted cross-breeding experiments in the rice field, when they braved the high temperature to search one by one, and finally found six naturally male sterile plants in the rice field.
After two years of observation and experimentation, Mr. Yuan Longping had a rich understanding of rice male sterility materials, and finally published these integrations in the "Science Bulletin" in 1996.
During those two years, Mr. Yuan Longping used the 6 sterile rice strains and successfully propagated four of them for 1~2 generations, and this research completely overturned the traditional classical theory of "asexual hybridization".
However, Mr. Yuan Longping experienced that the most feared thing for today's agricultural university students is that the results of his hard-working experiments will be destroyed.
On April 30, 1968, Mr. Yuan Longping inserted more than 700 precious experimental materials into the field of No. 7 Zhonggupan of Anjiang Agricultural School, and after carefully taking care of it for 10 days, something happened.
Early in the morning of May 19th, Mr. Yuan Longping went to the experimental field to observe the growth of the experimental seedlings, who knew that when he arrived at the edge of the field, Yuan Longping instantly stayed in place, it turned out that the experimental field was good yesterday, I don't know who destroyed it, and all the experimental seedlings were uprooted and destroyed.
This is the hard work of Yuan Longping's teachers and students for three years, and it was not until 4 days after the incident that the remaining 5 roots and seedlings were found in an abandoned well in the school.
Since then, Yuan Longping and his students have done more than 3,000 crossbreeding experiments with nearly 1,000 varieties, but the results are not satisfactory, and most of them remain sterile, which means that large-scale production is impossible.
It was not until 1970 that Yuan Longping's assistant, with the help of Nanhong Farm in Hainan, discovered the male sterile wild rice that was later called "wild defeat", and Yuan Longping took it as the mother to breed more than 200 second-generation "wild defeats", and finally found a breakthrough from it, which took Yuan Longping nearly 10 years.

Scientific achievements
The hybrid rice studied by Mr. Yuan Longping realized the three-line matching in 1973, bred the first hybrid rice strong combination in 1974, and finally completed the planting technology of hybrid rice in 1975, thus laying the foundation for the large-scale promotion of hybrid rice in the country.
In 2020, the double-cropping yield of hybrid rice led by Mr. Yuan Longping reached 1530.76 kg, exceeding the expected target of 1500 kg.
Mr. Yuan Longping not only promoted hybrid rice in China, but was even hired by the United Nations as the chief consultant of international hybrid rice, and has traveled back and forth to the United Nations 30 times to carry out cooperative research and technical exchanges on international hybrid rice.
Not only that, Mr. Yuan Longping has also been invited by foreign countries many times, and has attended India, Vietnam, Bangladesh and other countries more than 10 times to guide the development of hybrid rice.
Since the 80s, Mr. Yuan Longping has held more than 50 international training courses on hybrid rice at home and abroad, and has trained about 2,000 government officials and agricultural machinery experts from more than 40 countries.
When Mr. Yuan Longping passed away, all walks of life at home and abroad expressed deep mourning, which shows that Mr. Yuan Longping's contribution to the cause of hybrid rice in China and even the world has been unanimously recognized and highly praised at home and abroad, and his departure is a great loss for China and the world.
