Skiing should not only be vigilant against sports injuries such as fractures and torn ligaments, but also beware of an eye injury that is easier to ignore, "snow blindness".

"Aaaah, eye pain." On February 9, Ms. Hu (pseudonym) of Hangzhou held her 8-year-old son MingMing to the ophthalmology department of Zhejiang Hospital, and Mingming did not dare to open her eyes the whole time, crying out in pain while crying tears.

Obviously, I am in the clinic

The day before, Ms. Hu's family went skiing at the ski slopes. Ming Ming played from the morning to the sun went down, skied for 7 hours continuously, and kept excitedly saying "I want to be like Gu Ailing" and grew up to become an Olympic champion.

"In the middle of the night, the child kept shouting that his eyes hurt and cried vigorously, did he break his eyes while skiing?" Ms. Hu anxiously asked the doctor.

Wu Zhenyu, an ophthalmologist at Zhejiang Hospital, was diagnosed with "electro-optical ophthalmia", also known as "snow blindness", which is an inflammation caused by ultraviolet rays causing damage to the cornea and conjunctival epithelium.

On February 11, Xu Jiehui, chief physician of the hospital's ophthalmology department, told the surging news that the snow reflects extremely high sunlight, reaching nearly 95%, looking directly at the snow is like looking directly at the sun, and the ultraviolet rays in the sunlight are the culprits of snow blindness, "Skiers will wear snow goggles, which is to reduce the strong stimulation of the eyes by snow and ultraviolet rays in the sun." ”

Xu Jiehui introduced that under normal circumstances, the snow surface does not directly reflect the sunlight into the human eye like a mirror, but stimulates the eyes through the scattering of the snow surface. Even if you wear protective goggles, if you experience a long period of skiing like Mingming, your eyes will be stimulated by scattered light for a long time, and you may still get "snow blindness". The disease generally occurs 3-12 hours after skiing, usually with symptoms such as fear of light, tears, inability to open the eyes, blurred vision, etc., and can cause corneal injuries and retinal injuries, corneal injuries are particularly common.

Retinal injuries present with temporary or permanent loss of central vision, and some patients recover 10 minutes or hours after the onset of the disease. Corneal injuries are characterized by eyelid redness and swelling, conjunctival hyperemia and edema and a wide range of epithelial spot stains of the cornea, with symptoms such as foreign body sensation, photophobia, lacrimation and difficulty opening the eyes, which can cause serious consequences if not treated in time.

Xu Jiehui reminded that if there are symptoms of "snow blindness", you should go to the dark place or blindfold the eyes with a cold towel to reduce the symptoms, do not apply hot compresses; do not force your eyes, try to rest; seek medical treatment in time, take medication under the guidance of a doctor, and after the corneal epithelial damage, one to three days can be cured.
