48V battery systems can be used in a wide range of growing markets such as mild hybrid electric vehicles, trucks, electric multi-wheelers and solar panel battery packs. These lithium-ion battery systems require positive and negative voltage protection. In addition, if there is an overcurrent, such batteries must be able to quickly and reliably disconnect from the load within a few microseconds. Since the battery pack may not be dedicated to one vehicle, condition diagnostics and overcurrent protection threshold configuration are important.
To meet these needs, Infineon has introduced the IceDRIVER 2ED4820-EM, a smart gate driver with SPI interface. This gate driver can be used with Infineon's 80/100V OptiMOSTM MOSFETs and can be used for high-current load switches in 48V networks.

The intelligent dual high-side gate driver 2ED4820-EM in the EiceDRIVER APD family can withstand negative voltages as low as -90 V (Vbat) and positive voltages up to +105 V – a wide range of voltage fluctuations that can occur in short circuits or poor contact conditions. In addition, the driver contains a current sense amplifier for high-side or low-side current measurements. Low-side measurements leverage the existing shunt resistance of the battery management system, helping to reduce costs, PCB footprint, and overall power consumption. With two integrated output channels, the driver also enables control of a dedicated precharge path or separates the battery's charge from the discharge current path, further reducing pcB footprint and overall cost.
Availability
At present, 2ED4820-EM has been put into production. The product is a QM device and comes with a safety application note for use in functional safety applications. To speed up the design introduction process, Infineon offers evaluation and reference boards with the EiceDRIVER APD 2ED4820-EM for customer ordering.
