In 2005, a farmer in Xinjiang, China, found a row of rock paintings of skiers near the Altay region. It depicts ancestors stepping on skis and bending their bows and arrows, chasing and hunting cattle and horses. Archaeologists have found that these petroglyphs date back to around 8,000 to 10,000 BC.

In 2015, more than 30 ski historians from 18 countries around the world, including Norway, Sweden, Finland and other countries, jointly issued the Altay Declaration, declaring that Altay in Xinjiang, China is the oldest ski resort in the world.
