In fact, the production time of the Volkswagen ID.5 was longer than expected, because the new car had already entered the trial production stage as early as mid-February last year. However, due to the covid-19 pandemic and chip supply problems, Volkswagen forced Volkswagen to close the Zwickau plant for a period of time in November, resulting in a delay in mass production of new vehicles.

With mass production of the Volkswagen ID.5, the plant has produced six pure electric models of the Volkswagen Group, including the Volkswagen ID.3 series, ID.4 series, Audi Q4 e-tron, Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron and Seatborn.

This marks the completion of the transformation of Volkswagen's Zwickau plant, which is considered to be the first large-scale vehicle plant among the world's top automotive brands to shift all production capacity from internal combustion engine models to electrified products, which took about 26 months. At present, the plant has a potential production capacity of 330,000 vehicles per year for the production of these six models. Since 2018, about 1.2 billion euros, or about 8.5 billion yuan, have been invested in the renovation of the plant.

In addition, in 2021, the company produced about 180,000 ID.3 series units at its transparent plants in Zwickau and Dresden, both of which aim to increase production in 2022.

In 2022, Volkswagen will produce pure electric models based on the MEB platform at three other plants, of which the Emden plant will produce the new Volkswagen ID.4 for 2023; the Hanover plant will produce Volkswagen ID.BUZZ, and the Chattanooga plant in the United States will also produce Volkswagen ID.4, which has entered the trial production stage. Volkswagen said that the global Volkswagen brand all-electric manufacturing capacity is expected to reach 1.2 million vehicles, including Europe, the United States and China.
