Children have a degree of optometry and do not have to wear glasses

With the deepening and popularization of the knowledge of "myopia prevention and control", parents have changed from ignoring their children's diopter to smelling the "degree" discoloration. Do I have to wear glasses when I have a degree of refraction? With the arrival of the winter vacation, this problem has attracted the attention of parents. Sun Ping, chief physician of the Department of Ophthalmology of Subei People's Hospital, pointed out that the refractive power cannot be simply replaced by the degree of refraction.

Wearing farsighted glasses too early can be counterproductive

Kindergarten vision examination, a 3-year-old child's vision is 0.6, then inform the parents that the child may be amblyopia, go to the hospital for examination. When he arrived at the hospital, the doctor found that the child was 200 degrees farsighted, so he equipped the child with a pair of 200-degree farsighted glasses...

As everyone knows, a 3-year-old child should have been 200 degrees of hyperopia, obviously a normal eyeball, but wearing a farsighted mirror, which is to push the child in the direction of myopia.

Sun Ping introduced that after a person is born, the eyeballs will grow in proportion to the various organs of the body. At birth, the transverse diameter of the eyeball is not much different from that of adults, but the longitudinal diameter (eye axis) is very short. Newborns have an eye axis of only 16 mm, and 3-year-olds have an eye axis of 19.5 mm, and it is not until the age of 18 that the normal adult eye axis length (24 mm) is reached. That is, children are hyperopic (the eye axis is short, and images of external objects are focused behind the macula under the fundus). As age increases, the eye axis gradually lengthens, and the refractive state gradually develops in the direction of the orthopedic eye. 200-degree farsightedness is normal for 3-year-olds and does not need to wear glasses. Unfortunately, most parents do not understand this knowledge and blindly give glasses to children with normal vision.

Wearing glasses does not deepen myopia

Many parents are reluctant to wear glasses for myopic children prematurely, believing that wearing glasses will deepen the degree of myopia, and once the glasses are worn, they can no longer be taken off.

Sun Ping introduced that if myopic patients do not wear glasses reasonably, it will cause two consequences: one is prone to eye fatigue, affecting learning; second, patients are often forced to squint at things in order to make their vision clearer, and the upper and lower eyelids compress the eyeball for a long time, which will lengthen the front and back diameter of the eyeball, prompting an increase in the degree of myopia. It can be said that wearing glasses not only does not deepen myopia, but has the effect of slowing down the deepening of myopia. The reason why some children will have a deepening degree of myopia after dispensing glasses is mainly related to their lack of attention to eye hygiene and poor reading habits, and are not directly related to wearing glasses.

The refractive power is not consistent with the lens power

"The refractive power is not consistent with the lens power." Sun Ping pointed out that children need to combine the different stages of growth and development to make comprehensive judgments, and adults need to consider comprehensively in combination with work, daily life status, and reading habits, and cannot simply replace the degree of optics with the degree of refraction.

Sun Ping suggested that in view of the current qualifications of optometrists in the mainland, many practitioners lack the necessary optometry knowledge, in order to avoid the occurrence of wrong dispensing of glasses and endangering vision, parents may wish to take their children to large general hospitals or specialized hospitals with strong comprehensive strength and excellent medical quality. Recommended medical refraction, refraction is to check the refractive state of the monocular eye, wearing glasses is both eyes to see the same object, must obtain the best binocular monosopic function, which needs to combine the eye position, adjustment function, astigmatism axial and other medical manifestations of the eyes, to give the correct prescription for glasses. The goal is to see clearly, persistently and comfortably in both eyes. This is the essential difference between medical refraction and ordinary refraction.

Sun Ping reminded that for adolescent patients with a certain degree of myopia, wearing appropriate glasses at the right time is an effective means to reduce visual fatigue and slow down the deepening of myopia. In addition, patients should also pay attention to eye hygiene and improve reading habits, and strengthen preventive health care. Su Xuan Ding Yun
