At the 2022 North American Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the BMW Group unveiled four innovative digital achievements, including four new themed modes ( My Modes ) , BMW Theatre Screen , BMW IconicSounds Electric and "E-ink" technology.

BMW, which is in the process of fully transforming to electrification and intelligent networking, is providing users with a more personalized and emotional luxury travel experience through continuous breakthrough digital technology and innovation.

The ultimate "BMW Mobile Private Cinema"

BMW's "cinema mode" future in-car entertainment system has attracted a lot of attention.

Under the "Cinema Mode", BMW can turn the rear space into an exclusive private theater through the "BMW Theatre Screen".

At the hardware level, BMW in cinema mode features a 31-inch ultra-wide panoramic display with a resolution of up to 8K, cleverly integrated into the car's canopy system, extending from the canopy to the front seat backrest. On-screen entertainment can be played in 16:9, 21:9, and even 32:9 formats, complemented by bowers & Wilkins 4D Diamond surround sound systems for a superior immersive entertainment experience.

In terms of content, BMW will join hands with Amazon Fire TV to provide users with rich entertainment content; in the Chinese market, BMW can also cooperate with domestic mainstream video media to bring content that conforms to the viewing habits of Chinese consumers. In the future, for BMW passengers, they will see the blockbuster movies released in the cinema on their way to and from work.

In terms of safety, the BMW suspension giant screen has also undergone many crash tests, which can fully ensure the safety of passengers and completely dispel all concerns about whether installing such a large screen on the roof will affect driving safety. As for the ease of control, the screen tilt and the position of the touch screen area on both sides are designed just right, and the user can easily operate in a comfortable sitting position.

Overall, a 31-inch ultra-wide, 8K resolution display, 5G connectivity, surround sound, and customized streaming programs will allow BMW to set a new industry benchmark in in-car entertainment.

Four new My Modes theme modes,

Empower an all-sensory immersive experience

At this CES, BMW also released four new themed modes, namely "Relax Mode", "Expressive Mode", "Digital Art Mode" and "Theater Mode".

These four new theme modes go beyond traditional user interface design to open up multi-sensory immersive experiences for users by building immersive experiences such as touch, hearing, and vision.

The newly sculpted and exquisite interface is perfectly presented in an all-in-one suspended curved screen in an artistic form, and vividly interprets the infectious design with the visual effects of intricate light and shadow, light and dark transformation. Among them, "Relax Mode" and "Expressive Mode" will be launched in the second half of 2022, and users can easily obtain these two new theme modes through OTA remote upgrades.

In addition, it is particularly worth mentioning that BMW has joined hands with Ms. Cao Fei, an internationally renowned multimedia artist and designer of the 18th BMW art car, to create the "Digital Art Model", where BMW will also be among the first car companies in the world to apply digital art to cars, bringing a completely different sensory experience to the drivers and passengers.

Master creates a SIMULATION OF THE SOUND WAVE OF A BMW ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Compared with internal combustion locomotives, one of the biggest features of electric vehicles is that there is no traditional engine roar. But for many car enthusiasts who love to drive, the roar of the engine is always the most important part of the driving experience, especially for BMW, a brand that has always emphasized handling and riding experience.

To this end, BMW has invited Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe winners, and Hans Zimmer, an internationally renowned composer who has composed the theme songs of Hollywood blockbusters such as "The Lion King", "Inception", "Interstellar" and "Dune", to create an emotional electric vehicle sound wave for BMW's electric vehicle models - BMW IconicSunds Electric. Since then, driving BMW's electric vehicle will also make the driver feel passionate.

From a functional point of view, outside the car, the pedestrian sound wave warning function (AVAS) can allow pedestrians to perceive that there is a vehicle coming nearby, and avoid it in advance to ensure safety; inside the car, BMW will design exclusive sound effects for each "theme mode" of the electric vehicle, each sound effect has a rich sense of layering, and it matches the visual effects presented under different "theme modes", bringing users a unique driving experience. In the first half of 2022, BMW electric vehicle acoustic simulation will be the first to be installed on the innovative BMW i4, and will be gradually promoted to other BMW electric models in the future.

"E-ink" technology

- Taking into account both individuality and sustainability

At this CES exhibition, "electronic ink" can also be described as a big highlight. Its emergence, which can well take into account people's needs for personalized travel and sustainable travel, is one of the best embodiments of BMW's digital innovation. In the future, BMW can unlock more usage scenarios and use effects through OTAs based on "electronic ink", which can better achieve energy-saving effects while also meeting customers' ever-increasing personalized demands.

"E-ink" is made up of millions of transparent microcapsules with a diameter of only one hair. Each microcapsule contains a negatively charged white pigment, as well as a positively charged black pigment. That is to say, as long as the electrodes on both sides of the microcapsule are controlled, the desired color can appear on the surface of the car body.

BMW manufactures "e-inks" of different sizes based on changes in patterns and curvatures of the car's surface, and ultimately achieves a one-touch discoloration of the BMW iX surface by controlling the electrodes. For different car owners, they can completely adjust the color of the body according to their mood and environment. Changing the mood brought about by changing colors, which seems to be difficult to operate, has become a task that can be completed with the touch of a finger.

In addition, reducing energy consumption is another major advantage of "e-ink".

Specifically: compared with black, the white surface can reflect more sunlight, if the body color becomes a light color, it can correspondingly reduce the impact of strong external sunlight and high temperature on the interior of the vehicle, and prevent the interior of the center console, dashboard and other interiors from overheating;

In the case of lower temperatures, turning the body dark can help absorb more heat from sunlight, reduce the energy consumption required for air conditioning heating, and effectively increase the electric range. Therefore, different body colors can help improve the comfort in the car and reduce the energy required for the electrical system.

At this CES show, we did not see BMW release ambitious electric vehicle plans, because that should be the annual international auto shows large and small; instead, on the stage of the Consumer Electronics Show, the BMW Group brought a number of digital innovations from consumer demand and consumer car pain points.

Immersive technology and superior design aesthetics create an inspiring experience that gives users an insight into how BMW is understanding the new mobility model and putting that understanding into engineering practice in the first place. Such a BMW makes competitors even more intimidated!
