What is the difference between reading picture books regularly and not reading picture books?

Today, a colleague asked me about choosing a book for my child.

The colleague's child is currently four or five years old, and the interest class of various cultural classes cannot be "double reduced", but the starting line cannot be relaxed.

Colleague: "I want to improve my child's reading ability, what kind of picture book is better for my child?"

Colleague: "Read more books, and then your Chinese grades will be good." Either way, it's always good to stuff a little bit in."

Read more picture books, and my Chinese scores will be better in the future?

As a mom of two and a reading instructor, I've come to the conclusion that there may be no difference.

Because how you read and what you read is more important than how much you read.

If the first two problems are not solved, there is not much difference between reading picture books and reading children's books, and listening to stories, children will still stay at the level of "stories are not fun", in that case, picture books will not play the value of picture books, unfortunately.

Let me tell you my opinion from three aspects.

1. What is the use of reading picture books?

To answer this question, you first have to make sure that you are showing your child a real picture book, not a picture book with stick figures.

The key difference between the two is that the picture book's drawings tell a story, but the stick figures are only auxiliary to the words.

When I read the Warm House series picture books to Kebao, each page of the picture book only has one sentence, if you just read it, it will be very boring.

In addition to the text in the book, I would take her to see the story on the picture, and sometimes she would string together the objects on the picture herself.

Picture books are not only story books, but also game books.

When I told Kebao about the book "My Mother and Me", "I am my mother's little follower, how she does it, how I do it." 】

Speaking of this, I will not go down immediately, and I will also play games with Kebao according to the appearance of the bear in the picture.

What is the difference between reading picture books regularly and not reading picture books?

Me: Lift your left foot.

I lifted my left foot, and Kebao followed suit.

Me: Lift your right foot.

I lifted my right foot, and Kebao followed suit.

In this way, this book is a book for her and her mother, others can't talk about it, only her mother tells her, talks about it together, and plays together.

If it's just ordinary stick figures, no environmental background, no character details, no secondary characters, there will be no sense of substitution, and there will be no interactive games.

In the book "The Story of the Brain," neuroscientists have done experiments by putting two kittens into a cylinder with vertical stripes painted on the inner wall of the cylinder. Both kittens move in circles inside the cylinder, giving visual input.

The first kitten walked on its own; the second kitten was placed in a small box connected to the central axis of the cylinder.

What is the difference between reading picture books regularly and not reading picture books?

The two cats saw exactly the same thing, but the experimental result was that only the first cat learned how to see. That is to say, only by moving yourself can you complete the learning.

It's just that the mother talks, the child listens, and if there is no interaction in the process, the child gets very limited.

It is important to answer the question of what is the use of reading picture books and how to read them.

2. How is the picture book read?

Regarding picture books, there is also a phenomenon that some parents think that a picture book is only a few dozen pages, but it costs dozens of pieces, which is very expensive.

When a child reads a sample book in a bookstore and likes it and wants to buy it home, the parents will say, "Haven't you already seen it?" It's good to see it. ”

Parents who think like this must not really be short of dozens of dollars, but feel that it is not worth it. Will feel that it is not worth it, or think that the picture book is a picture, and there are not a few words, and it is so expensive that it is not cost-effective.

This brings us to several common misunderstandings of reading picture books.

Myth 1: Throw it to your child to see for himself

Because the picture book itself does not have a few words, it is a big picture, if parents can't take care of it, they will throw it to their children to read by themselves. But it is not that children can understand well without many words, and if children cannot understand, they will not be interested in picture books. Maybe the love of reading is missed.

I once got a picture book "Mirror Image" by chance, and this picture book did not have a word. But I took the story with me and read it at least 5 times before and after to sort out the context of the story. Every time Cobo picks it up, it's like picking up a treasure map, and it's very exciting.

What is the difference between reading picture books regularly and not reading picture books?

Maybe the child didn't like to read at the beginning, but just one or two books she liked might light up her interest and put her on the path of loving reading.

Myth two: a variety of audio apps, let the child listen to it themselves

Now there are many such electronic products, which also plays a useful supplement to children's expansion of knowledge.

Kebao is now in the 4th grade, and she has also rushed through a lot of story APP, learning idioms and listening to stories, which is really good, but I have never bought her a show about picture books.

Picture books are often used as an option for reading enlightenment. When I read the picture book to Kebao, I noticed a detail: after I read a page for her, I would stop and wait for her for a while.

Her gaze will stay on the screen, as short as a few seconds, as long as a dozen seconds. When she came back and said to me, "Continue," I'll give her another step.

I especially cherish the ten seconds she paused, and those ten seconds were her thinking. I wouldn't ask her what she was thinking, just let her do this, build a link to the picture book, and the purpose of reading will be achieved.

This is incomparable to all kinds of apps, although those broadcasters have standard pronunciation, professional emotional control, precise deduction, but will not be paused according to the needs of the baby, the baby has heard it and passed.

Don't think that it is very convenient to pause, press the pause button on the line, the baby will not take the initiative to do this.

Myth three: Use it as reading comprehension material

Speaking of this misunderstanding, I would like to examine myself.

Because I have the certification of a reading instructor, I will unconsciously want to stuff all the contents of a picture book to Kebao.

Before Kebao encountered problems in writing, it was always difficult to describe this technique. I just saw the picture book "Little Tree" and felt that it was very well prepared, so I planned to squeeze the book for her according to the routine of the reading instructor. The book is fully explained here.

At the beginning of the first page, Kebao protested.

"When Raindrop teachers talk about idioms, they first tell stories and then tell knowledge."

In other words, I didn't tell her stories, I didn't care about stories, I only cared about the knowledge I wanted to give her, but she cared.

If I don't care about what she cares about, she won't care about what I want her to care about.

So I read it to her at her request, without mentioning anything I wanted to say to her, which was equivalent to a preview.

Wait until the second time, I will tell her where the creation of this story is good, and what descriptions she can learn from.

The genius physicist Feynman said that learning should be an easy task.

If learning seems to be strenuous, it is likely that the content of learning or the learning process is not well designed.

After saying three misunderstandings, how should the picture book be read? It's like playing a game, just playing and reading. Don't think about the use of reading picture books, the role of picture books will come out imperceptibly.

The greatest value of reading is not to make children's language grades good, but to reflect in all aspects of useless use.

3. Questions about the amount of picture book read

Before I said this, my regular book buyer, one day shared with us something laughable.

There is a father who is particularly good at mathematics, picks up sticker books for his children, divides the price by the number of stickers, and tells the agent how much her book, a single sticker, is worth the price of a single sticker book, and there is no other seller's sticker book.

I want to say that this dad's model is too rough, how can it only count the number of stickers? There is also an area size for stickers.

Of course, this is a joke, I just want to tell you that the number of readings, in fact, there is nothing to compare. The key is to protect your child's curiosity and interest.

And the picture books that children like, even if they are the same book, can be read often. This is why the number of children's picture book reading is actually calculated by the number of times, and a book is counted twice, and ten times is counted as ten books.

There are many good books, and we can't finish them all our lives. As long as some of the books you have read can enrich the child's world, it is not a vain reading. Don't think too much about whether it is useful or not, enjoy the process with your heart, and the result will naturally be.
