Typical case 1

In July 2021, Ms. C, who lives in the western United States, met a male netizen, D, through WhatsApp. After the other party learned that Ms. C was alone on a dating website, he pursued Ms. C and induced her to download an investment APP in which he provided a network link. Initially, Ms. C spent $1,000 on "investment products" in the app and made a net profit of 20%. Subsequently, under the lure of high profits and the "inside information" lie, Ms. C transferred a total of $170,000 to the platform in 10 days. It wasn't until she discovered that D had multiple WhatsApp accounts and refused to make videos on multiple occasions such as toothache that Ms. C gradually felt cheated. She immediately applied for a withdrawal of funds through the app platform, but it was too late.

Typical case 2

In 2019, Mr. E met a female netizen F through a dating website. F claimed to be engaged in financial foreign exchange trading in Hong Kong and persuaded Mr. E to join her in buying and selling foreign exchange on an online platform. In September 2020, F claimed that an internal investment project had a high rate of return, but asked for 6 months to withdraw cash, Mr. E heard that F had invested $100,000, and then transferred $100,000 to the platform. In May 2021, the platform showed that the two had earned $1.3 million. When Mr. E applied for withdrawal, the platform required him to pay a deposit of US$223,200 and a tax of US$148,800 before it could be accepted. Mr. E lost contact with F after transferring the relevant margin and taxes to F and the platform, and the online platform could not log in.
