Professor Wang Jianxin of the School of Cultural Heritage of Northwest University: Practicing the essence of education in the archaeology of the Silk Road|| a model for teaching and educating people in Shaanxi Province in 2021

In Northwest University in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, there is such a group of people, they are the advanced collective of the national education system, they are the model of the Three Qins in Shaanxi Province, and they are the Central Asian Archaeological Team of Northwest University. Their captain is Professor Wang Jianxin, a white-haired but passionate one.

Wang Jianxin graduated from Northwest University with a bachelor's degree in archaeology, a second-class professor, and is currently the director of the Silk Road Archaeology Center of Northwest University, a professor of the School of Cultural Heritage of Northwest University, and the chief scientist of the Silk Road Archaeology Center of Shaanxi Province. Thirty-nine years from the teaching road, twenty years of Silk Road archaeology, Wang Jianxin with his own bit of persistence and efforts, with the sincerity of communist party members, to build archaeology with Chinese characteristics, to cultivate a new force of archaeology with international vision, constantly shine and contribute his own strength. His decades of efforts have been unanimously recognized by teachers and students in the school, and have been affirmed and received by national leaders for many times, and have successively won the honorary titles of Lei Feng Pacesetter of Shaanxi Province, Advanced Collective of National Education System, Moral Model of Shaanxi Province, and Model of Sanqin in Shaanxi Province.

These honors and affirmations are the greatest recognition and praise for his unremitting efforts, and they are also the respect and reputation he has won in the decades of rushing years.

Think of danger in times of peace and aspire to be high

In 1978, after years of student life, Wang Jianxin was finally admitted to the Department of Archaeology of Northwest University as he wished. In 1982, due to his outstanding performance and excellent ability, he stayed in the school to teach after graduation, and since then he has opened a long road of education. In 1983, he entered Peking University for one year of further study, and in 1986, he went to Nara University of Education in Japan for one and a half years, during which he successively made a series of important achievements and research in Neolithic archaeology based on the excavation of the case board site and Buddhist archaeology based on the site of The Charity Temple. In 1995, Wang Jianxin began to serve as the director of the Department of Archaeology of Northwest University, in order to find a bright and broad way forward for the archaeology of Northwest University, he organized many discussions among colleagues in the teaching and research department, and later under the guidance of his predecessors, formulated the sixteen-character discipline development policy of "basing on Chang'an, facing the northwest; Zhou Qin, Han and Tang, and silk road". Although the direction is there, but there is still a lack of a breakthrough, in many exchanges with Japanese scholars, Yueshi gradually entered Wang Jianxin's vision. But choosing to look for Yueshi means that everything has to start from scratch, to give up the familiar research comfort. For the sake of Xida archaeology, so that Chinese archaeology can have its own voice in the field of international archaeology, Wang Jianxin rose to the challenge and embarked on the road of restarting the archaeology of the Silk Road. And his spirit of not being afraid of difficulties and having lofty aspirations has also inspired generations of students.

In 1999, at the annual meeting of the Chinese Archaeological Society, Wang Jianxin clearly proposed that "Chinese archaeology must go out", which became the direction of his unswerving commitment for more than 20 years.

Eclectic talent

Taking the search for Yueshi as a breakthrough and taking Chinese archaeology going abroad as the direction, the goal and direction have been clear, so where are the people who implement it? In addition to organizing the teachers in the teaching and research room to start this work, Wang Jianxin's greater focus is to recruit excellent students and cultivate excellent students. Archaeology has been an unpopular major for a long time, and there are not many people who apply for the examination, and even fewer can enter the graduate stage to really participate in scientific research. In order for Chinese archaeology to go abroad, it needs talents with international vision, international communication skills, interdisciplinary and diversified talents. To this end, Wang Jianxin does not take the origin of archaeology classes as the threshold, but removes the threshold, and all students who like archaeology and aspire to archaeology are willing to teach and cultivate with all their might. Xi Tongyuan, a 2000 undergraduate student of electronic science and technology at Northwest University, because he loves archaeology very much, resolutely chose archaeology in 2004 when he was studying for a master's degree, and Wang Jianxin accepted him. In the following eight years, Xi Tongyuan, under the guidance of Professor Wang Jianxin, moved forward, receiving a doctorate in archaeology in 2012 and staying on to teach that year. Today, he is already the main leader of the Silk Road archaeology team of Northwest University, and his research advantage is remote sensing archaeology, which is closely related to his undergraduate studies, and his ability in the application of electronic information technology in archaeological research is outstanding and his achievements are outstanding.

Since then, Li Rong's undergraduate architectural design, Bai Haifeng's undergraduate urban planning, Yao Di's undergraduate landscape architecture, etc., a number of interdisciplinary students, under the careful teaching and guidance of Professor Wang Jianxin, have played an important role in various research fields of archaeology and cultural heritage protection.

Today, with the Silk Road archaeological team led by Professor Wang Jianxin going abroad, it has been continuously deepening in the study of central Asian archaeology. The need for talents in related fields is also more urgent, and under the inspiration of Professor Wang Jianxin, a young man who studied Russian literature in Russia from high school to doctorate joined the team. He is Mei Zilin, after graduating in 2018 and returning to China, in the process of looking for a job, he gradually learned about Northwest University and learned about Professor Wang Jianxin and his team. In January 2019, Dr. Mei officially became a teacher of Russian language at the School of Foreign Chinese at Northwestern University. Then, in a consultation on a topic application, Professor Wang Jianxin sincerely analyzed to Mei Zilin his professional advantages and unlimited prospects in archaeological research. Out of genuine love for archaeology and out of admiration for professor Wang Jianxin's personality charm, Dr. Mei, like teacher Wang at that time, stepped out of the comfort zone and joined the asceticism of archaeological research. In October 2019, Dr. Mei Zilin entered the postdoctoral workstation of the Department of Archaeology of the School of Cultural Heritage, and under the guidance and help of Professor Wang Jianxin, he took the Cypriots and Scythians as the research topics, and developed it with great strength, and there has been 1 academic paper to be published.

Logic is crucial

The selection of people can be broad-minded, but the education of people must be strict and scientific. "Good logical thinking is a necessary condition for scientific research", this is a sentence that Professor Wang Jianxin often teaches students, and it is also one of the academic qualities he values most. Wang Jianxin not only pays attention to the process of teaching, imparting students with corresponding professional knowledge and cultivating students' professional skills in field archaeology. He pays more attention to cultivating students' scientific research ability and academic thinking, and he believes that as long as he has a good thinking logic, no matter what kind of scientific research he is engaged in, he can succeed. Therefore, although he thought that he was an archaeology teacher, he always reminded students to read more philosophy books, and even regarded reading philosophy books as one of the basic lessons for students to complete. Wang Jianxin believes that learning philosophy can effectively improve a person's logical thinking ability, and thus promote in-depth thinking about archaeological problems and understand the nature of the development of things. Out of this coaching philosophy, Wang Jianxin does not miss any opportunity to guide students to think deeply.

In the summer of 2012, Professor Wang Jianxin led the students who had just completed their undergraduate internship to return to Xi'an by bus and stayed in Hami for one night. When the car was reloaded before departure the next day, the students began to cram their luggage into the luggage compartment messily because no one organized it, and it was quickly stuffed, but many of them were not put in. At this time, he chose a classmate, first unloaded all the things that had been loaded, and then reloaded them one by one according to the size. Professor Wang Jianxin took this opportunity to tell the students that loading luggage and writing papers are very similar, first of all, the material (luggage) should be put out, and then find a suitable position for it according to the characteristics of the material, so that the material and the material can be closely coordinated to form a compact and logical whole.

Logical thinking should pay attention to both systematicness and integrity, and also pay attention to particularity, and cannot ignore the particularity outside the universality. This is what Professor Wang Jianxin often proposes when he guides students' papers, whether it is in the planning and design of the protection of the Han Great Wall sites, or in the study of nomadic archaeology in Xinjiang, although the students' problems are diverse and strange. But he can always grasp the main points of students' thinking, first help them sort out their ideas and clues, establish a scientific and rigorous logical thinking, and then modify and improve from the article itself. Over the years, Wang Jianxin's strict requirements and physical attitude of studying are still the same as yesterday in the memories of Many students such as Bu Lin and Zhao Lingyan.

Sleep and forget to eat, dedication

Strict self-discipline, determined to move forward. Professor Wang Jianxin not only requires students with a rigorous academic attitude, but also sets such an example by personally. In 2001, the archaeological investigation of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province had just begun, and during a long-distance drive, Professor Wang Jianxin unfortunately had a traffic accident, fractured eight ribs, and recovered a life from the ghost gate. Many people thought that Wang Jianxin would give up the follow-up investigation work, and surprisingly, after several months of hard treatment and rehabilitation training, Wang Jianxin once returned to the field investigation work in the northwest.

He Junfeng, a 98-level archaeology undergraduate at Northwest University, has been pursuing a master's and doctoral degree with Professor Wang Jianxin since 2002, and in his essays and memories, Professor Wang Jianxin is a typical "workaholic". In 2002, he went with Mr. Wang to Nilek, Xinjiang to conduct archaeological investigation. I thought that teacher Wang Jianxin should try to avoid climbing high and climbing risks because of his initial recovery from serious injuries, but when investigating and expanding rock paintings, Teacher Wang Jianxin always rushed to the front. During that time, Teacher Wang Jianxin was always the first to get up in the morning and wake up the students one by one. When he went up the mountain to paint rock paintings, because of the steepness of the mountain, the most dangerous points he always went up by himself, and the students were not allowed to go up. When he returned to the station in the evening, when the students were exhausted and fell asleep, he was still working late and late. In 2005, when He Junfeng wrote his master's thesis, Professor Wang Jianxin was too busy with his affairs and did not take too much care. After He Junfeng's first draft was formed, Wang Jianxin specially took a few nights to guide him to revise, often changing it overnight, and finally sat down in a chair and fell asleep. Professor Wang Jianxin's spirit of hard work has profoundly affected He Junfeng and many other students.

Based in Chang'an, facing the northwest. Professor Wang Jianxin's thinking is sometimes jumpy, but only because he is concerned about the protection of China's cultural heritage. At the beginning of the 21st century, with the continuous strengthening of China's national strength, the vigorous development of society, and the prosperity of cultural heritage protection, but problems have also emerged. How to better protect cultural heritage and contribute to social and economic development has triggered Wang Jianxin's in-depth thinking. In 2005, the Xi'an Municipal Government entrusted wang Jianxin with the task of designing the protection plan for the ruins of Han Chang'an City. In order to formulate a more scientific protection plan, balance the conflict of interests between cultural protection and economic development, and find a new way out for cultural heritage protection. Wang Jianxin often took Bai Haifeng, Li Rong, Bu Lin and several other masters to run to various villages, factories, enterprises, etc. in the ruins of Han Chang'an City to conduct on-site research and inspection, listen to their voices, and publicize the importance of cultural heritage protection to them. In his work, he repeatedly warned students that they must be down-to-earth in their research, and without research, there would be no qualified protection plan. In addition to winning the support and understanding of the local population, it is also necessary to obtain financial support. Once, in order to obtain a loan from the World Bank for road protection and planning in the ruins area, Professor Wang Jianxin took Bai Haifeng and Li Rong to work overtime for two consecutive days and two nights without sleep. Dedication can only be done with sincere enthusiasm for this cause. Wang Jianxin's spirit of forgetting to eat and drink and dedication is still influencing students such as Bai Haifeng, who is already the vice president of the Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Research Institute.

Meticulous care and meticulous attention

Field archaeology is always arduous and bitter, and taking good care of students' lives in the wild has always been the focus of Wang Jianxin's field work. Field archaeology is originally a hard work with its back to the scorching sun and facing the loess, and the field archaeology work in the northwest region has to withstand a more harsh and harsh environment. Wang Jianxin, who has been working in the field for many years, is very clear about this, and in the field, he does not blindly ask the students to "suffer their hearts and bones", but often advises them to do what they can, take care of their bodies, and not overwork. Since most of the team's work is in the northwest region, and even in recent years, the main body is in Central Asian countries, the diet will always make everyone tasteless after a long time. Wang Jianxin always took the time to cook some hometown flavors for everyone and improve their taste buds, and many students still remember Teacher Wang's spicy chicken wings even after graduating for many years. Once in 2017, I was also thinking about things while cooking, and I cut my finger.

Professor Wang Jianxin not only has a good cooking skill, but is often read by students, and the courage and responsibility he honed when he was a soldier also touched many students. In the past, students sometimes heard some of Wang Jianxin's experiences and stories when he was a soldier and built roads, and admired their hardships and bravery. The 2020 field survey made the students feel this bravery firsthand. At that time, Wang Jianxin and his students lived in the Jinchang Hotel, which is a large hotel with dozens of stories. Once, not long after they entered the hotel elevator, the elevator hovered in mid-air, and when everyone was anxiously waiting for the maintenance worker, the elevator door suddenly opened automatically, and when Deng Chen's students had not yet reacted, they had already been pushed out of the elevator by Wang Jianxin. Finally, Wang Jianxin himself walked out of the elevator. Later, after the maintenance workers confirmed the safety of the elevator, they returned to the elevator. At a time of danger, Wang Jianxin disregarded his sixty-eight-year-old age and pushed the students out of danger first, how brave and worthy of respect.

Since Professor Wang Jianxin has been teaching for 39 years, he has always kept in mind the mission of Northwest University to "carry forward the national spirit, integrate world ideas, and shoulder the heavy responsibility of building Northwest China". After decades of ups and downs, Professor Wang Jianxin and his colleagues have created a "trinity" archaeological discipline system with archaeological research as the cognitive system of cultural heritage value, cultural relics protection technology as the cultural heritage value, and cultural heritage management as the inheritance system of cultural heritage value on the solid foundation laid by their predecessors. Under the new disciplinary system, Professor Wang Jianxin has successively guided nearly 80 master's and doctoral students in the directions of Qin and Han archaeology, Northeast Asian archaeology, Central Asian archaeology, Buddhist archaeology, nomadic cultural archaeology, cultural heritage protection and management, etc. In addition to domestic students, there are also international students from Japan and Central Asia, many of whom have grown into industry leaders. Through these students, he spread the idea of cultural heritage protection to Central Asia and to more parts of the world. He took archaeology as a garden, and on the road of Silk Road archaeology, he taught students the importance of thinking and the importance of logic; he personally experienced and told students that they should pursue the goal with perseverance; he forgot to eat and sleep, persevered, and admonished students to pursue the truth with practical actions. He is Wang Jianxin, who practices the original intention and essence of education in the archaeology of the Silk Road!
