In recent years, Beijing has become an important force in the global innovation network, focusing on the strategic positioning of the capital city of the "four centers", focusing on the leading role of Beijing as an international science and technology innovation center, and accelerating the development of new quality productivity. Huairou Science City is a new "growth pole" and "carrying place" for the construction of Beijing International Science and Technology Innovation Center, and has now entered the stage of paying equal attention to construction and operation. Up to now, 10 of the 37 scientific and technological facility platforms that have been laid out in Huairou have entered the operating state.

On April 28, the parallel forum of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference - the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Open and Sharing Forum and the Major Achievements Conference of the Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center was successfully held in Huairou Science City.

With the theme of "International Cooperation and Openness and Sharing", the forum was hosted by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Beijing Municipal People's Government, and co-organized by the Department of High Technology of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Bureau of Science Communication of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Science and Technology Innovation and Development Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Huairou Science City Management Committee.

About 300 people attended the forum, including major scientists from the national major scientific and technological infrastructure of the Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center, experts from Germany, Japan and international organizations, responsible comrades of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Development and Reform Commission and relevant departments of Beijing, and users of research institutions and enterprises of various scientific and technological facilities.

The top ten scientific and technological facilities platforms are fully opened, and an "invitation letter" is issued to the world

At the opening ceremony, Lin Jianhua, deputy secretary of the party group and deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, introduced the construction progress of 10 scientific and technological facilities platforms that have entered the operation state, the direction of the fields supporting the research and the open operation, and sincerely invited users from all over the world to make an appointment.

At present, the comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device, the earth system numerical simulation device, the multi-modal and cross-scale biomedical imaging facility, the materials genome research platform, the clean energy materials testing, diagnosis and R&D platform, the advanced carrier and measurement technology comprehensive experimental platform, the advanced light source technology R&D and testing platform, the space science satellite series and payload development and testing support platform, the headquarters of the International Meridian Circle Science Program, and the space astronomy and application R&D experimental platform have been fully opened and are operating well.

At the same time, this forum released the representative major achievements of scientific and technological facilities platforms such as the second phase of the Meridian Project, high-energy synchrotron radiation light source, and comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device to the world.

  • The Meridian Project has built the world's largest ground-based integrated monitoring network for the space environment, and one of the landmark equipment of the second phase, the Annular Array Solar Radio Imaging Telescope, is currently the world's largest integrated aperture radio imaging telescope with the best imaging performance in the same frequency band.
  • The successful beam of the high-energy synchrotron radiation light source booster marks the successful completion of the construction task of the light source injector, and the construction of the accelerator has entered the critical stage, which is one step closer to the first beam of light emitted by the "brightest light source".
  • The trial operation of the comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device and the breakthrough of key core technologies have been made, and the internationally advanced extreme conditions physical property measurement system and ultrafast spherical aberration correction transmission electron microscope have been independently developed.
  • The output of major scientific and technological achievements in science and education infrastructure and interdisciplinary research platforms has been accelerated, and collaborative innovation has been facilitated.
  • BrainCog, a brain-inspired cognitive intelligence engine created by the Brain Cognitive Function Atlas and Brain-like Intelligence Interdisciplinary Research Platform, provides a new set of general basic components for researchers of brain-inspired intelligence and computational neuroscience.
  • The R&D platform for deep resource detection technology and equipment has built the first set of domestic intelligent guide drilling system "module-instrument-system" full-chain and systematic R&D test platform to promote the research and development of intelligent guide drilling equipment in mainland China.
  • The high-performance klystron developed by the high-power and high-reliability klystron development platform for large scientific devices promotes the development of core devices for large scientific devices in mainland China.

Deep collision of ideas, "zero distance" contact with large facilities

The keynote speech session of the forum was presided over by Academician Wang Chi, Director of the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Wu Yirong, President of the Aerospace Information Innovation Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Wang Yifang, Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Fang Zhong, Director of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Andreas Wanner, Director of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research, Jülich Research Center, Germany, and Chong Kamiyama, Senior Advisor of the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Su Dong, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the construction and operation experience of the scientific and technological facility platform, and shared relevant cases of relying on the scientific and technological facility platform to produce research results. Hu Shaofeng, Director of the Department of Science Policy and Basic Sciences of UNESCO's Natural Sciences Sector, exchanged views on promoting the progress of basic scientific research through the sharing of scientific infrastructure, laboratories and equipment.

The forum also invited representatives of more than 100 scientific research institutions and enterprises to attend the forum to visit and understand the major scientific and technological infrastructure up close. At the same time, three special seminars were organized on important topics such as the scientific research progress of comprehensive extreme conditions experimental devices, the open sharing of high-energy synchrotron radiation light sources, and the development of life science industry in Huairou Science City, so that the innovation subjects can have "zero distance" access to the facility platform and jointly promote the integrated development of the innovation chain and the industrial chain.

Since its approval in 2017, after nearly seven years of hard work, Beijing Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center has become one of the regions with the most complete national strategic scientific and technological force system and the highest density of major scientific and technological infrastructure in the country. In addition to the 37 scientific and technological facilities and platforms that have been laid out, it has also gathered 1 national laboratory, 3 new R&D institutions, a number of leading scientific and technological enterprises, as well as 21 affiliated units of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and high-level research universities such as the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, with 23,000 scientific research personnel. At the same time, the urban functions of "Science + City" have been continuously improved, and important functional facilities such as the urban living room and Yanqi International Community have all been unveiled, and the construction of Yanqi Town has been promoted with high standards.

In the future, the Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center will play a greater role in promoting the construction, operation and open sharing of major national scientific and technological infrastructure, continuously improving the ability of basic research and original innovation, producing major breakthrough results, supporting big science plans, and promoting the deep integration of global innovation subjects, so as to accelerate the construction of a world-class original innovation carrying area and promote the development of new quality productivity.
