On April 17, 2024, the 2024 Urban and Rural Planning Undergraduate Joint Graduation Design Mid-term Evaluation Activity was held in the Hansen Lecture Hall on the first floor of Building 27, Wushan Campus, South China University of Technology.
The mid-term evaluation was presided over by Professor Zhou Jianyun, director of the Society and director of the Department of Urban Planning of the School of Architecture of South China University of Technology, and more than 60 guests and representatives of teachers and students from the seven schools participated. 11 groups of graduation design teams from South China University of Technology, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Beijing Forestry University, Peking University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Nanjing University made wonderful reports, and the expert judges made in-depth comments on them, in order to jointly explore the road of diversified and integrated urban governance.

Vice Chairman of Urban Planning Society of China
Vice Chairman Sun Yimin first expressed the joy of gathering with all the guests and teachers and students of various schools. In the face of the current development status of the industry, planners should strive to explore the innovation of urban and rural planning concepts and methods, get inspiration from exchanges, and reap progress in their efforts. It is hoped that teachers and students of all schools will overcome the barriers of thinking and reality in the learning stage, and find solutions with confidence. The graduation project is located in the complex area of Guangzhou Railway Station, and I hope that everyone can jump out of the inherent routines and inertial thinking, create results that can truly solve practical problems, and leave seeds for the future development and transformation of the industry. Finally, Vice Chairman Sun Yimin once again emphasized the importance and support of the Urban Planning Society of China for the joint completion of the seven schools, and thanked everyone for their hard work.

Deputy General Manager Chen Zhimin was pleased and honored to be invited to participate in the joint completion of the seven schools. The Guangzhou Railway Station area will be further renovated in 2026, and the high-speed rail will enter the central urban area in the future, driving the sustainable development of the industry and injecting new impetus into the development of the area. As a window of reform and opening up and a place of historical and cultural inheritance, the renewal of the form and environmental quality of the Guangzhou Railway Station Area and the creation of future vitality are the focus of Guangzhou's renewal and development. Nanjing University
Drawing on the theory of symbiosis, the team of Nanjing University proposed the C3 recovery plan, which adopts the three methods of "creation", "connection" and "integration" to realize the symbiosis of different levels of regional virtual and real through exogenous goal orientation, and realize the symbiosis between local and foreign, man and nature, old memories and new trends through endogenous problem orientation. The team proposes five strategies: local symbiotic point activation, string points into lines to construct corridors, reconstruction of various subsystems, and multi-circle nesting mode, in order to finally realize the symbiotic circle layer system formed by the hub circle, business circle, life circle, ecological circle and cultural circle.
Expert commentary
The experts affirmed the overall work framework of the students and the selection of the "symbiosis theory", and the team realized that the renovation is a complex event for the real society, and it is necessary to integrate the real city fragments through the method of virtual and real symbiosis. In terms of spatial form, the plan grasps the spatial context of connecting the axis of Baiyun New Town to the north, and better lays out the street system in community construction, especially the concept of gradual industrial upgrading, which helps to retain the original industrial genes and promote the future upgrading and transformation of the industry. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) In terms of current situation analysis, we should strengthen the identification of site problems, pay attention to the extraction of local characteristics and the perspective of local residents, and deeply analyze the reasons behind the phenomenon.
(2) In terms of strategy, we should increase feasibility thinking, strengthen interface logic thinking, expand the content understanding of each symbiotic circle, and improve its relevance.
(3) In terms of scheme generation, it should be appropriately extended to the surrounding areas, and its functional positioning, road network structure and spatial form should be considered in a larger scope.
(4) Attention should be paid to the issue of indicators and deepen the understanding of the concepts of various indicators.
Beijing Forestry University
The team of Beijing Forestry University analyzed the three major dilemmas of the existing station south and north division of the base, the decline of exhibition function and industry, and the low quality of space, and put forward the three goals and visions of the Bay Area transportation hub, the future city booth, and the highland of the service and packaging industry, and built the four major strategies of "hub connection to promote regional redevelopment, industrial upgrading and resource reintegration, space quality improvement and portal reactivation, cultural rejuvenation and village-city reintegration", and gradually shaped the spatial form from multiple perspectives such as transportation, industry, gateway, and green space.
Expert commentary
The experts affirmed the design scheme of the north-south connection based on systematic considerations. Expand the scope of the design and present a higher integrity in the space. Adopt a cautious renewal approach for Sanyuanli Village to maintain the continuity of cultural and industrial paths. The report text system is comprehensive and the thinking is clear. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) Strengthen the understanding of the complexity of the base, deepen the understanding of the urban village, and put forward more precise goals for different spaces. Focusing on the bottom-up perspective, we will deeply observe and think about the human elements in the base, and consider how social, policy or market forces can implement the ideal spatial form from a soft perspective.
(2) The spatial structure shows the regional style from the perspective of ties and booths. Maintain and expand the existing green space system model, and analyze the positioning and characteristics of the area from the overall systematic needs of the city.
(3) Considering the transformation and upgrading of Guangzhou Station, the design of the station body after the high-speed rail enters the city, and its relationship with the surrounding areas, the relationship between the shape and the core functional requirements is explored, and the impact of future passenger flow changes is considered.
(4) Clarify the update model, pay attention to the problem of demolition, reform and retention, and improve economic calculation.
Peking university
The Peking University team analyzed the characteristics of six groups of people, including the current situation of minors, young entrepreneurs in new industries, young people living in working and living in the block, middle-aged people working in traditional industries, middle-aged people working in low-end businesses, and the elderly group, and evaluated their needs from five aspects: transportation system, regional positioning, living environment, cultural memory and industrial upgrading. To this end, five themes are proposed: step by step rebirth, three-dimensional integration, green valley renewal, rhyme back to the south and ingenuity to build dreams, to create an industrial revitalization, cultural context renewal, ecological friendliness, and pedestrian-friendly Sanyuanli block.

The experts affirmed the thinking logic and critical thinking ability of the Peking University team. Starting from the needs of the population, space and industrial development, it brings an enlightening new perspective. The scheme is very distinctive in the study of population and spatial patterns, and it is suggested for improvement in the later stage:
(1) When discussing urban problems, we should pay attention to systematic sorting and explore the logic behind them.
(2) Define the scope of the problem, respond to the actual pain points, highlight the key research, and enhance the local adaptability of the solution.
(3) Transform abstraction into concreteness, and transform it into concrete data and space combination mode through engineering means to improve the operability of the scheme. At the level of detailed planning, determine the planning and design objectives and time dimensions, and consider whether the strategy is feasible.
(4) Supplement and improve the overall systematic analysis of larger scales to form a macro-meso-micro overall spatial design, and the fractal isomorphism method can be used to form a general regional map.
South China University of Technology
The team of South China University of Technology adopted the form of role-playing seminars, combined with economic calculations and comprehensive consideration of the interests of all parties, to explore a sustainable development model of win-win cooperation among multiple subjects. Drawing on the case of the renovation of Utrecht railway station in the Netherlands, a public space system that crosses property rights boundaries is formed through public-private partnerships. Learn the idea of collage city, and create a "prophecy theater" and a "memory theater" in the north and south areas of Guangzhou Railway Station to form a differentiated spatial form texture.
Expert commentary
Experts believe that the overall logic and work results of the South China University of Technology team are relatively complete. From macro to micro, the spatial evolution process and future development changes are analyzed, and an obvious spatial shaping logic is formed. The new way of working with multi-scenario comparison and role-based workshops is an excellent simulation process to assist in planning decisions. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) Deepen the study of basic concepts, including classicism and modernism in the context of the new era, land reserve in the context of stock planning, and implement the diagram at the spatial level.
(2) Increase the research of industrial ecology, focusing on the relationship between enterprises and enterprises, people and enterprises, and how to respond to these problems in the venue.
(3) Combined with the proportion and scale in the molding process, the granularity of the spatial texture is considered.
(4) In addition to considering material factors in economic calculation, we should also pay attention to value factors that cannot be calculated.
Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture
The No. 1 team of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture proposed to promote the internal comprehensive urban development and the external embodiment of the urban form with various elements. It is hoped that the theme of urban life, production and ecology will be responded to through the unitized form shaping, and the unit stitching method will be used to form the construction of urban building blocks from micro to meso to macro. The No. 2 team of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture decomposed the complex urban organism into different units, divided into four subsystems: transportation, industry, culture and facilities, and planned the subsystems separately with time and space as anchors. Focusing on the two core issues of industrial positioning and high-speed rail entering the city, the No. 3 team of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture takes the three elements of brand building, consumer market and creative design as the entry point to create an urban show with leadership, influence and support, and build a fashion development model and a variety of use spaces.

Experts fully affirmed the design concepts of the three teams. The three groups of reports are systematically complete and logical, which plays a role in promoting the shaping of the overall shape. Team 1 had a good understanding of the design task, and the design scheme fit the theme. The No. 2 team has a more accurate control of the planning positioning and target vision. The work of the No. 3 team is solid, and the scene is vividly shaped. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) Strengthen the understanding of basic concepts such as station-city integration, and analyze their rationality and implementation.
(2) Increase the analysis and judgment of the current situation, extract the core and key issues in the design of the area, and explore the mechanism behind them. A cohesive analysis can be carried out around the design concept.
(3) Further think about the transformation path from the prototype of the spatial model to the final scheme, and consider the social problems reflected in the space.
(4) It is suggested that the No. 1 team should respond to the original spatial texture in the spatial organization, and the No. 2 team should strengthen the overall coordination between the spatial form of the scheme and the surrounding environment. Team 3 strengthened the sense of spatial order in the plan, and the height of the building and part of the building volume needed to be reconsidered.
Hust
Under the concept of "space media", the No. 1 team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology activates the communication energy of the space through the scene creation mode, forms a complete and three-dimensional media ecology, and creates a commercial space and publicity space with long-term vitality. The No. 2 team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology used the growth process of a seed as a metaphor to narrate the story starting from Guangzhou Station, advocating more efficient station-city integration to help Guangzhou Station develop into an efficient and intelligent new hub, planning and building high-quality public spaces for citizens to create a new pattern of green beauty and vitality, building diversified community culture and supporting facilities to achieve a low-carbon and smart new living environment, and implanting digital industry development formats to build a new international business platform.

Experts believe that the achievement system of the two teams of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is complete, with a clear theme and clear logic. The plan is broad-minded and pays better attention to public space and public interests. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) Refine and deepen the spatial organization and improve the planning and design. The design technique of Team 1 is slightly fragmented, and the expression of the spatial form of the core scope still needs to be refined. The design of the central axis of the No. 2 team has weak line of sight and is difficult to form a commercial interface, so it is recommended to improve.
(2) In terms of the concept of the program, the No. 1 team further studied the target group and positioning of "IP". The No. 2 team pays attention to the spatial value and cultural value of the old city, and carries forward the characteristics of the city in the renewal.
(3) In response to the needs of the original users in the space, the consideration factors for retention, renovation and demolition should not be limited to the quality of the building, but should also consider the wishes of the owners, the upper planning and other factors, and conduct comprehensive analysis, judgment and selection.
(4) Critical thinking about concepts such as carbon neutrality and how to implement the concept.
Harbin Institute of Technology
Facing the future era and the rapid development of Guangzhou, the No. 1 team of Harbin Institute of Technology proposed the "Smart Chain Yuancang, Memory and Enjoyment Growth" - a guide to the time and space of the future city, integrating science and technology with local renewal, and aspiring to build a new star of Guangdong-Hong Kong, a smart brain center, and a gateway to Guangzhou with three types of planning strategies: the city can breathe, the city can move, and the city can stay. The No. 2 team of Harbin Institute of Technology proposed the concept of a settled city, starting from the problem of transnational business and trade migration, hoping to promote the formation of an international cultural area, and create a more resilient mobile social landscape and a solid fulcrum in a diverse transnational culture and mobile society.

Experts affirmed the depth, framework integrity and logic of the two teams at Harbin Institute of Technology. Both groups of students adopted the method of urban experiments to explore more possibilities for future planning and transformation. The construction of large system thinking is excellent, and the system analysis and research are in place. Team 1 demonstrated an accurate positioning of urban planning, using a variety of design techniques to create diverse urban spaces. Team 2 has a unique mode of expression, a novel entry point, and a good focus on the people, history and culture inside the venue. Suggestions for later improvement:
(1) Team 1 should strengthen the interpretation of the concepts of "breathable", "movable" and "stayable" in the city, simplify the design strategy, and consider and refine the strategies and methods that can really solve practical problems. Team 2 should distinguish between "free development" and "natural development", and balance retention and demolition in the organic renewal of the stock.
(2) Broaden the horizon, comprehensively analyze, and think about the task of urban renewal from the regional level. Team 2 should expand the meaning of "settled city" and recognize the role of the base in the city.
(3) In terms of spatial layout, Team 1 should consider the relationship between the reserved space and the new features. Team 2 should consider the impact of the railway station on the area and consider the rationality of the zoning.
(4) Refine the spatial design, implement the planning objectives into scenario-based performance, deepen the expression of the map, and strengthen the integrity of the results.

After the overall report, the guests shared their thoughts with the teacher representatives of the seven schools, and expressed their gratitude to the Urban Planning Society of China, the drawing experts, and the teachers and students of the seven schools. The North Area of Guangzhou Railway Station is a subject full of challenges and exploratory significance, and each team put forward their own unique planning and design plans from different perspectives, and achieved mutual communication and common improvement through mid-term evaluation.

Finally, Deputy Secretary-General Qu Changhong made a summary of the mid-term evaluation of the joint graduation design of the seven universities. She pointed out that the joint completion is not a competition, but an exchange and a teaching link. The participation of teachers and students in the joint completion program is not in competition with each other, but focuses on improving and perfecting their abilities through exchanges. As an important starting point and support for the society to strengthen the construction of the basic discipline of urban and rural planning, on the basis of the joint graduation design of the six schools, a new platform for multidisciplinary integration has been built, each school has a different professional background, how to adapt to the needs of different management departments, and play a prominent leading role in the industry and planning colleges, this new platform still needs to be explored, and the society will also provide more support and investment, hoping that each school can show its strengths and adapt to new needs and new challenges.
