A United Nations (UN) helicopter carrying two Somalian men and several foreigners forced to land in a community in Somalia due to technical problems, but the place was controlled by the radical armed group Al-Shabaab, and the people on board were suspected to have been held hostage, which has been confirmed by the Somalian military and the United Nations mission in Somalia.
According to Reuters and CNN, Somalia military spokesman Major Ali revealed that shortly after the helicopter took off from the Belandwen district in central Somalia, it was forced to land near the village of Sindre on the border of the Garguduud district due to technical problems, and the people on board were immediately held hostage.
Ali noted that "the helicopter in question, which was carrying two Somalian men and several foreigners, was also carrying medical supplies, and was supposed to transport wounded soldiers from the Gargaduud area".
In addition, a UN staff member who did not want to be named earlier said that "the crew included five foreigners on board", and two other UN sources with details revealed that "the helicopter was carrying a total of nine passengers", although Reuters could not independently verify the identity or nationality of the people held hostage for the time being.
