Liberia is a small country in West Africa and one of the poorest countries in the world, with more than 80 per cent of its population living below the United Nations poverty line, and most people eke out their livelihoods by growing some food crops.

Liberia does not have its own industrial system, all daily necessities are imported, and high unemployment and a severe lack of infrastructure have led to an extremely difficult life for the Liberian people.

The biggest problem facing Liberians on a daily basis is food and clothing, and most families here cannot afford enough food and often have problems eating three meals a day.

Even the most basic household items, such as a pair of plastic flip-flops for a few euros, need to be purchased in installments, and it can be said that the daily life of the Liberian people is suffering from unimaginable poverty and deprivation.

At the same time, Liberia's infrastructure is severely underdeveloped, with the largest city of Monrovia, for example, lacking a well-developed pipeline, electricity and drainage system.

When the rainy season comes, Monrovia becomes the "Venice of Africa", with streets and alleys submerged in torrential rains, pedestrians drifting in rudimentary boats, and houses and belongings severely damaged.

The situation is even worse in rural areas, where most of them do not have any defences such as flood levees, and when the flood waters rise, they wash away houses and cause heavy casualties to livestock and people.

Villagers can only flee to slightly higher areas for refuge and wait for the flood waters to subside on their own, which often lasts for a week or even a month, which can be said to have greatly discouraged the production enthusiasm of rural residents.

When the floodwaters finally subsided, young people in Liberia began wading alone or in groups to the sides of the road to help passing vehicles through the muddy terrain for about 50 euro cents per trip.

Despite the meager pay, this temporary work has become the only employment opportunity for many young people in a country with an unemployment rate of 85%.

At the same time, small traders who make a living selling daily necessities have also taken advantage of the opportunity to start their business activities, and they will travel to the capital in dilapidated trucks to buy goods and sell them to the countryside at higher prices.

As a country without an industrial system, Liberia relies on imports for all daily necessities, which provides small traders with a certain margin for earning the price difference, however, the long distance and difficult environment still make small traders suffer.

While poverty and natural disasters have put life in a desperate situation for the Liberian people, efforts are being made to help from all sectors of society.

Many caring groups around the world are concerned about poverty in Liberia and are providing material and technical support to the local population.

They hope to promote the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, so that Liberia can come out of the shadows and live a decent life as soon as possible.

Liberia still has a long way to go, and in the future, it needs to accelerate not only infrastructure development, but also economic diversification to alleviate unemployment.

Only in this way will Liberia be able to break free from the curse of poverty and truly move towards the door of prosperity and modernization, which of course requires close coordination and joint efforts between the Government of Liberia and the international community.
