GDSII for Chip and IC Design Data Format
GDSII is a data format for the exchange of integrated circuits or layout data in electronic design automation (EDA). It is a binary file format that is used to represent flat geometry, text labels, and information about layouts in a hierarchical form. GDSII was developed by Calma in the '80s and later taken over by GE and Cadence. GDSII has been the industry-standard database for integrated circuit layouts, and although OASIS has gained considerable traction, GDSII is still the primary format commonly used to build the physical layout of chips. The file header includes information such as the version number, last modified date, file name, and structure identifier. Elements such as boundaries, paths, text, nodes, boxes, and so on can be defined in structural segments.
