The recent spread of the epidemic and the emergence of unfavorable factors such as the unstable situation in Ukraine have made it more difficult for the global automotive industry, which is already facing problems such as tight supply chains, high prices, production cuts and even production stoppages, coupled with the high base of the same period last year, the world's major auto market continued to decline in March.

According to LMC Automotive, global sales of light vehicles (passenger cars + light commercial vehicles) fell by more than 1 million units year-on-year in March, and the decline also expanded to 14.0%.

Meanwhile, in March, the global new energy passenger car market achieved the second highest performance in history, 851,489 units, which is only slightly lower than the record of 907,606 units set in December last year, but its proportion of passenger cars is about the same as that of the latter, both at about 15%.

Due to the 87.0%, 99.0% and 60.0% increases from January to March, the global new energy passenger car market grew by 77.0% in the first quarter of this year, and the cumulative sales volume reached 1,997,348 units.

As we all know, the proportion of annual sales in the first quarter of the car market is about 20%, which infers that the total sales of new energy passenger cars in the world this year can basically reach about 10 million units. Even considering that factors such as the epidemic, supply chain shortage, high car prices and insufficient production capacity may have certain restrictions, thanks to the strong support of governments in the new energy market and the active promotion of new energy models by car companies, the annual sales volume should eventually remain at least around 9 million vehicles.

Model Y completely replaces the Model 3

Returning to the market performance in March and the first quarter, the biggest change in the model TOP20 list is that Tesla Model Y completely replaced the Model 3 as Tesla's subsidiary, and it is also the best-selling model in the global new energy passenger car market.

As a latecomer, although the Model Y has provided a huge increase in branding since its launch, its status has always been slightly lower than that of the Model 3. Even if model Y sales in the Chinese market have surpassed the Model 3 since August last year, globally, the former can only lead slightly in the non-quarter-end months of the same period, so the latter is still the strongest support for the brand in the whole year of 2021.

After entering 2022, this situation has changed dramatically. The Model Y won the first place with 17,240 and 14,968 units in January and February, respectively, and also topped the list in March with a gap of more than 10,000 vehicles, and the performance of 92,221 units also set a new record for the highest sales of a single model in Tesla and the global new energy passenger car market.

This also allowed the Model Y to win the title of new energy best-selling model for the first time for three consecutive months, and for the first time, it won the first place in the quarter. In the future, with the gradual increase in the production capacity of the Berlin factory in Germany, the sales volume of Model Y will continue to grow, and it will also firmly occupy the top position in the single-month and cumulative list.

After two consecutive months of stable sales of 26,000 units, in March Wuling Hongguang MINIEV finally "woke up" again, handed over a beautiful answer sheet of 47,563 vehicles, and continued to stick to the first echelon with a huge advantage.

It is worth noting that although the followers behind Hongguang MINIEV cannot threaten its third-place position in terms of single-month and cumulative sales, the menacing BYD Legion and Chery QQ Ice Cream in the same market segment are constantly launching a fierce offensive.

In March, BYD's Song Pro/Plus PHEV crossed the threshold of 20,000 vehicles for the first time, if the BEV version is added, Song's sales reached 26,741 vehicles, Qin Plus PHEV also continued to rank steadily in the 4th place, Dolphin also remained above 10,000 vehicles, and the Yuan Plus, which was only three months old, entered the list for the first time with 10,027 units and directly became the 13th place.

As the closest competitor to Hongguang MINIEV in the list, QQ Ice Cream has also brought a lot of impact. In the fifth month of listing, QQ Ice Cream exceeded 10,000 units, which also brought its total sales in the first quarter to 28,113 units, once again returning to the top ten of the cumulative list.

In addition to the above models, the Hyundai Ioiq5 and Kia EV6 are also worth mentioning, which are the only models in the single-month and cumulative model list that have not been sold in the Chinese market. Among them, in March, the former received the first monthly sales of more than 10,000 units since its listing, and there was only a difference of 9 units between it and the Volkswagen ID.4.

From the cumulative list, hyundai Ioniq5's ranking is constantly improving, with a new monthly high in March, Kia EV6 also appeared in the list for the first time. It also makes people wonder, after such great achievements in other markets around the world, will Hyundai-Kia consider introducing these two models to the huge Chinese market?

In addition, there is another discovery, that is, volkswagen ID.3 has never appeared in the list of single-month and cumulative best-selling models this year, Whether this is because under the premise of limited supply chain, Volkswagen chose to guarantee the production of ID.4, or because the more powerful ID.4 has been favored by more consumers.

Tesla is back at the top of the list

Judging from the brand list, sure enough, with the arrival of the peak delivery period at the end of the quarter, Tesla once again became the top of the list of single-month and cumulative sales, of which March also refreshed its own record in history with the help of Model Y.

Despite being pushed out of the championship by Tesla again, BYD's light is still very dazzling, and its monthly sales reached 6 figures for the first time in March to 104,669 units, which is the first time that the global new energy passenger car market has had two brands performing more than 100,000 units in a single month at the same time. And in terms of total sales in the first quarter, BYD has not been left too far behind Tesla, only 24,562 vehicles.

Although, due to the repeated epidemic situation in many places in China, some automotive supply chains are tight or even interrupted to affect production, coupled with relatively strict epidemic prevention measures that seriously affect the terminal market turnover, BYD only sold 105,475 vehicles in China in April, even if a small number of sales in overseas markets, may not be able to surpass Tesla backed by the world.

However, with the gradual stabilization of the epidemic, BYD's sales should rise again and continue to fight with Tesla for the championship title.

In fact, not only Tesla and BYD, but also Kia, Hyundai, Chery, GAC, Changan and Nezha also refreshed their own new highs in March. For example, driven by kia EV6, hyundai Ioniq5 and Aion Y, Kia, Hyundai and GAC also broke through the 20,000-vehicle mark for the first time, and the cumulative ranking of the first two also rose one place each.

With Changan Running EV rushing to 10,000 vehicles again, Changan's single-month performance also reached more than 15,000 vehicles for the first time, but unfortunately, due to the momentum of GAC, Great Wall and Xiaopeng, its single-month ranking did not rise but fell, and it was only difficult to advance 1 place in the cumulative list.

Regarding the Great Wall and Xiaopeng, although these two did not set the highest record, after a brief downturn, they also recovered their vigor in March, so they were able to return to the single-month list, and ranked 14th and 15th, and both advanced 2 places in the cumulative list. Among them, Xiaopeng's P7 also appeared in the list of models in the single month and the cumulative model again with a new high of 9,195. Like the Xiaopeng P7, Nezha V, which rushed to 8,122 vehicles, also led Nezha to be on the list of single-month lists again.

Compared with the above seven, Chery's performance is even more eye-catching, thanks to the dual power of QQ ice cream and eQ1, Chery not only returned to the top ten in a single month, but also faced the aggressive Kia and Hyundai in the cumulative list, and also advanced the ranking to 9th.

Of course, in addition to the above lucky ones, there are also some brands that have experienced a significant decline, such as Volvo, Dongfeng and Ideal. Among them, the ideal drop is the most obvious.

Although its Ideal One has remained in the top ten in the list of single-month and cumulative models, only one model is still an ideal hard injury, so it not only slipped to the bottom of the cumulative list in the first quarter, but also missed the single-month list. However, with the arrival of the ideal L9 at the end of May, this situation may be improved.
