In 1964, Xia Youliang just turned twelve years old, and the years when he entered Shangsi Middle School can be said to have influenced his life. Among them, two old teachers left a deep impression on him, "one was the art teacher Wang Zhizhi, who taught me to draw the illustrations of the 'Song of Ouyang Hai', told me about color, composition, and virtual reality, talked about the conventional techniques of dyeing, filling, painting, and hooking chinese painting, and at the same time told me the realm of 'Qi with meditation and undressing like a garment'." More than fifty years have passed, and xia Youliang's teachings and traditional aesthetic concepts are still fresh in Xia Youliang's memory. "The other is Wu Luying, a teacher who manages the library, and she will take the initiative to recommend books to me every time, explain the character stories, historical background, and under her recommendation, I read a lot of famous books." In 1979, Xia Youliang worked in Hangzhou Measuring Tool Factory, working as a sand turner, fitter, grinder and other positions, because of his good writing skills, he was transferred to the factory department as a propaganda officer. Later, Xia Youliang studied calligraphy with Li Wencai, "He not only gave me guidance in technique, but also often took me to see many authentic calligraphy and paintings." It was also from that time that Xia Youliang and calligraphy formed an indissoluble relationship.
In 1985, Xia Youliang was admitted to the painting major of Hangzhou Adult University of Science and Technology (Teaching Point of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts), and systematically studied art theory under the guidance of outstanding teachers of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts such as Wang Bomin, Xu Yongxiang, Min Xuelin, Zhou Shicheng, Zou Guangming, Wang Dongling and other outstanding teachers of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. "Four years later, when I graduated from the creation, I had to find a guidance teacher, Mr. Li Wencai took me to Mr. Li Zhenjian's house, and Mr. Li Zhenjian did not ask me a word about painting, but asked how calligraphy was?" Xia Youliang recalled, "Mr. Li Wencai said that I had been studying with him for five years, and Mr. Li Zhenjian said, 'That's it!' In Xia Youliang's view, calligraphy and painting have long become an indispensable part of his life, "2 hours a day, which is the same as eating, it is a compulsory lesson every day." In addition to using his spare time to splash ink on the desk, Xia Youliang can always find inspiration for calligraphy and painting from life, and he has been thinking about how to write and draw well. Nowadays, calligraphy and painting education is also more and more concerned by the society and parents, as a teacher, Xia Youliang wants to pass on more good things, and he is still teaching with classes, willing to pass on the correct methods and techniques to the next generation and lead them to find their own direction.
Since 1989, Xia Youliang has insisted on personally handwriting the Spring Festival and sending it to various grass-roots units before the Spring Festival of each year. "It has been more than thirty years since I did the math, and it seems that it has become a habit to send Spring Festival leagues to the grassroots in various townships and towns every year, and at least two or three thousand paintings must be written every year." The period before the New Year also became a time when Xia Youliang was particularly busy, and sometimes he even had to "rush to the scene" and participate in several Spring Festival blessing activities a day. Before sending the Spring Festival to the countryside, Xia Youliang will also design some creative forms according to the zodiac signs of that year. "If you want to have a new meaning in the Spring Festival every year, you must do your 'homework', and a 'Fu' word has a hundred ways to write it here."
