Li Zhenjian

(1922-1992)

The founder of new Chinese realist freehand figure painting

People's artists who are rooted in life and close to the masses

Pioneer and outstanding representative of Zhejiang school figure painting

Li Zhenjian (1922-1992), a native of Jinyun, Zhejiang, was gifted, diligent and simple, and was good at writing and painting since childhood. In 1947, he was admitted to the Chinese Painting Department of Hangzhou National Art College (the predecessor of the China Academy of Art), and first studied traditional Chinese painting with Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou and Zhu Lesan, and then studied drawing and oil painting under Mo Pu. After graduating in 1950, he stayed in school as a graduate student and taught in the Department of Painting, and served as a professor at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, a member of the China Artists Association, and a director of the Zhejiang Artists Association. In his decades of teaching career, Li Zhenjian has specialized in freehand figure painting, integrating Chinese and Western painting techniques, and has successively created masterpieces that reflect the style of the times and national characters, such as "Mother's New Topic", "The Struggle of Jinggangshan", "Growing up in the Wind and Waves", and published "Li Zhenjian Painting Collection" and "Li Zhenjian Painting the Human Body", which has made outstanding contributions to the innovative road of Chinese freehand figure painting.

Since the 1950s, the exploration and innovation of realistic freehand figure painting has been the focus of Li Zhenjian's teaching and research. Li Zhenjian's artistic achievements lie in the integration of the modeling tradition since the Western Renaissance with the brush and ink language accumulated by Chinese painting for thousands of years; under the care of realism, the realistic figures of the times are placed in the painting form with national characteristics; the new paradigm of "Zhejiang school figure painting" is created, which gives new life to the tradition of Chinese painting since Gu Kaizhi who "writes gods in shape" in the new era.

This exhibition will feature more than 100 works by Mr. Li Zhenjian. The exhibition is divided into three sections:

"Zhejiang Character Kaishanzu" shows mr. Li Zhenjian's traditional Chinese paintings from his hometown of Jinyun to the National Art College in his early years. Among them, the first 1948 album 18 "Stone Law" spectrum map shows his solid pen and ink skills, and the 1955 "Ask the Way" represents the initial results of the exploration of the zhejiang school of figure painting language.

"Masterpiece of Brilliant Brush Painting" focuses on Mr. Li Zhenjian's masterpieces of ink figure painting. Large-scale works such as "Mother's New Topic" (1960), "The Struggle of Jinggangshan" (1960), "Growing up in the Wind and Waves" (1972) represent the achievements of the zhejiang school of character painting in the peak period of the wind god and national character of the times; "The Old Man of the Uyghur" and "Labrang Youth" (1962) show the precision of the integration of character modeling and pen and ink; the ink body painting series of the 1980s shows Mr. Li Zhenjian's achievements in artistic exploration and overcoming difficulties in his later years.

"Life Nurtures and Builds Foundations" showcases Mr. Li Zhenjian's sketches. The massive sketches not only witness Mr. Li Zhenjian's footprints in the north and south of the river, but also more powerfully say that loving life, taking root in life, and being close to the masses is the source of artistic creation.

In this exhibition, in addition to Li Zhenjian's early works from the folk collection, more than ten works such as Li Zhenjian's "Struggle in Jinggangshan", "Growing up in the Wind and Waves", "Ten Girls Under the Phoenix Mountain", "The River and the Sea", and "Taming of horses" collected by the China Academy of Art will also be publicly unveiled for the first time, which is particularly worthy of attention. Li Zhenjian has extremely high self-requirements for large-scale creations, and he often draws multiple versions to choose the best. The works in the collection of the China Academy of Art exhibited this time are the "twin brothers and sisters" of Li Zhenjian's masterpiece. Their clear and multi-dimensional creation shows Li Zhenjian's continuous tempering and repeated consideration of the creative process, which is the embodiment of his spirit of excellence and never giving up.

Mr. Li Zhenjian is one of the few Chinese painters who is also good at figures, landscapes, flowers and birds, thanks to his strict education in traditional Chinese studies in his early years. This exhibition exhibits several pieces of Li Zhenjian's early flower and bird paintings, combined with his Western painting sketches, to explore the roots of Zhejiang school figure painting modeling and brush and ink.

In order to commemorate this outstanding painter and art educator, the exhibition working group conducted in-depth interviews with more than 20 old alumni of the China Academy of Art, while salvaging the oral history materials, and showing Mr. Li Zhenjian's personality and his art from more dimensions. This series of interviews will be presented in the form of a video in the exhibition.

After this exhibition, the School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Art of China Academy of Art will send teachers and master's and doctoral representatives to Jinyun County, Li Zhenjian's hometown, to conduct aesthetic education activities. The trip will donate dozens of reproductions of Li Zhenjian's Chinese paintings to Heyang Village in the newly built town, hold a special lecture for Heyang Primary School, and conduct sketching exchange activities with teachers and students of Jinyun Arts and Crafts School.

"The Avenue Goes Deep - Commemorating the Centenary of Li Zhenjian's Birth Exhibition" will be a touring exhibition at the Lishui Art Museum in the second half of 2022.
