The so-called 4680 battery is a cylindrical traditional battery, similar to the No. 5 battery we use, except that its diameter is 46mm and the height is 80mm. Previously, the Model Y had been using a 2170 battery, which was one-fifth the size of the 4680 battery. That is to say, the 4680 version of the Model Y can now use a smaller number of batteries than before.

The 4680 battery adopts an omnipolar ear design scheme, which shortens the positive and negative path, reduces internal resistance loss and heat generation problems, and theoretically charges faster. The 4680 battery may be manufactured using a dry electrode process to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
Tesla 4680 version of the Model Y integrates 4680 battery, CTC, and integrated stamping technology, which can theoretically better reduce costs, improve marginal benefits and improve endurance and charging speed. But in reality, it remains to be seen.
