Samsung trial production of 4080 cylindrical batteries: comparable to Tesla 4680, energy density greatly increased

Tesla's release of the 4680 electrodeless ear battery in 2020 seems to represent a new direction in the industry's efforts, and Samsung SDI is reportedly trial-producing 4080 cylindrical batteries.

The so-called 4080, that is, the diameter of 40mm, height of 80mm. Compared with the 21700 battery promoted by Samsung before, on the one hand, the energy density is significantly improved, and the second is that the factory production is easier and can increase the output.

It is reported that the Samsung 4080 battery has entered the final specification confirmation stage, and will be put into production in overseas factories such as Malaysia and Hungary in the future, with the ultimate goal of winning orders from customers including Tesla and Lucid Electric.

In February last year, Samsung SDI and Lucid signed a supply agreement, but for now it is mainly 21700 batteries. Through the successful development and mass production of batteries such as the 4080, it is expected to compete with Panasonic in the future to produce the required 4680 batteries for Tesla.

Previously, Tesla had claimed that the energy density of the 4680 battery cell was increased by 5 times, the mileage of the whole vehicle was increased by 16%, the power was increased by 6 times compared with the polar ear battery, and the power output was increased by 6 times.

However, the commercial use of the 4680 battery is said to have been postponed to 2023.
