Character stories are one of the common decorative motifs of enamelware. The Bowl of the Republic of China imitation Qianlong-like enamel characters in the collection of the Jinan Municipal Museum is decorated with the character stories of Su Dongpo, Huang Tingjian and the Buddha Seal.

On one side of the bowl, there are four people sitting under the tree on the screen, from left to right: Huang Tingjian, Buddha Yin, Tong Zi, and Su Shi. On the other side of the bowl there is an inscription poem of "The cloud of the moment is out of the shaft, and the spring breeze is laughing by the Huxi Bridge", and there are two seals of "Shi" and "Ning".
The Buddha Seal was a monk of the Golden Mountain Temple during the Northern Song Dynasty, who was able to write poetry, humor and humor, and was informal. He was good friends with the famous literary artists Su Dongpo and Huang Tingjian, and the three of them often gathered together to recite poems against each other, and when they reached the place of pride, they drank happily and returned drunk. But every time there is a gathering, either Su Dongpo is the east, or Huang Tingjian pays for it, and the Buddha seal always eats and drinks in vain, and never returns the invitation. Su and Huang deliberated and decided to avoid him from a separate party and give him a little warning.
On this day, it was winter, and after the snow, Su Dongpo invited Huang Tingjian to take a boat to enjoy the snow, deliberately leaving aside the Buddha seal, a white-eating monk. The two were in the middle of the boat, intoxicated by the snow scene in front of them, and were brewing poems, when they overheard the urgent cry for help coming from the river, looking for prestige, only to see a large vat floating down the river. Su and Huang hurried to the boatman's house to save people, who knew that what was rescued was actually a smiling and giggling Buddha seal.
It turned out that Buddha Yin went to visit Huang Tingjian, Huang was not at home, but on the book case was an invitation from Su Dongpo to invite Huang to take a boat to enjoy the snow, and Buddha Yin suddenly understood their meaning, and immediately came up with the idea of hiding in a large vat to catch up.
Su and Huang smiled bitterly, and had to invite the Buddha Seal to the table, the Buddha Seal was not polite, holding up the cup and chopsticks, it was about to eat, Su Dongpo hurriedly stopped: "Slowly, or according to the old rules, chanting poems against each other, qualified people can drink wine and eat vegetables." The Buddha Seal asked, "What is the title?" Su Dongpo said: "The subject matter is not limited." After saying that, he pointed to the riverbank wrapped in silver makeup and took the lead in chanting:
Clouds in the sky, confused;
The snow on the ground is clear.
Clouds turn into snow, easy and easy;
Snow turns into clouds, which is rare and rare.
Huang Tingjian then dipped the ink urgent book:
Ink in the stone, confused;
The words are on paper, clear and clear.
Ink into words, easy and easy;
Words turn into ink, which is rare and rare.
The Buddha saw that the poems recited by the two men all had sentences that were "easy and easy" and "rare and rare", and knowing the meaning contained in them, he simply picked out the words, so he chanted:
I'm in the jar, confused;
Get on the boat and be clear.
I eat yours, easy and easy;
You eat mine, it's rare.
The frankness, straightforwardness and simplicity of the Buddha Seal, coupled with the humor and humor of his poems, caused Su and Huang to laugh.
