Excavated in 1972-1974, the Mawangdui Han Tomb in Changsha is an important discovery in the archaeological history of China and the world. "Vermeer" exhibition

Vermeer was a prominent Dutch painting master of the 17th century, and only 34 paintings attributed to him so far will be exhibited in this exhibition. These include The Young Woman Sitting in front of the Vigina at the National Gallery in London, The Lace Lady at the Louvre in Paris, The Maid Pouring Milk, Side Street, and Love Letters in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and Vermeer's most famous work, The Girl with a Pearl Earring, in the collection of the Maurites Royal Gallery in The Hague.

Freyle, pioneer of Vermeer's style

Exhibition period: February 10–May 29, 2023 

Vermeer's contemporary, Jacobs Freyer (active circa 1640-1660), was also a master of the Serenity style, and currently attributes about 50 paintings to Freyr, but little personal information has survived from the mysterious painter.

Choose Vincent: a portrayal of a family history

Venue: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Exhibition period: February 10–April 10, 2023

Through precious paintings, documents and personal objects, the exhibition presents group portraits of Van Gogh family members, tracing the history of the founding of the Van Gogh Museum and why Van Gogh's works were brought together and preserved. Van Gogh's important paintings include "Harvest" and "Blooming Apricot Blossoms".

Women in Italian art (1400-1800)

Venue: Berlin State Museum

Exhibition period: March 8 – June 4, 2023

Through the Berlin Museum of Prints and Drawings and collections borrowed from other institutions, the exhibition focuses on the works, stories and influences of women in Italian art from 1400 to 1800, showcasing their active and diverse roles in society.

Sun: Light source in art

Venue: Barberini Museum

Exhibition period: February 25 – June 11, 2023

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Monet's Impressions of Sunrise, the Barberini Museum in Germany and the Musée Mamotan in France jointly curated this exhibition, bringing together about 130 exhibits covering paintings, prints, sculptures, manuscripts and books, exploring the important role of the "sun" in European art history. Works on display include Rubens' The Fall of Phaethon, Turner's Motleck Terrace, and Paul Hynecke's Sunset's Harbor.

Picasso and prehistory

Venue: National Museum of Natural History, France

Exhibition period: February 8 – June 12, 2023

This exhibition is part of a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Picasso's death, showcasing the influence of prehistoric art on Picasso.

Picasso was born at a time when excavations of prehistoric remains in Spain flourished, and many of his works—especially during the interwar period—show the influence of prehistoric culture. The exhibition will focus on about 40 works by Picasso, including sculptures, prints, paintings and drawings, presenting the imprint of prehistoric art. Some of the works are on exclusive display.

Picasso Celebration: A Collection from a New Perspective

Venue: Picasso Museum, Paris

Exhibition period: March 7 - August 27, 2023

Artistic director by British fashion designer Paul Smith, the exhibition dialogues Picasso's work and collection with contemporary artists including Mikaline Thomas and Sheri Samba, allowing viewers to reflect not only on Picasso's global heritage, but also on his depictions of women and references to African artistic traditions.

Depicting Love – Exhibition of the Louvre Collection

Exhibition period: March 1–June 12, 2023

The exhibition carefully selects 73 paintings on the theme of "love" from the Louvre collection, spanning the 16th to mid-19th centuries, highlighting the exploration of the representation of "love" and the understanding of "love" by European painters in the art of painting. Highlights include François Boucher's Cupid's Goal, Antoine Watteau's Ninf and Satyr, Sassoferrato's Sleeping Baby Jesus and François Gérard's Cupid and Psyche.

Wang Xizhi and Lanting Order

Venue: Tokyo National Museum, Taito Ward Calligraphy Museum

Exhibition period: January 31–April 23, 2023

Jointly curated by the Tokyo National Museum and the Taitung Ward Calligraphy Museum, the exhibition will be divided into four themes in the two museums, presenting calligraphy and paintings related to Wang Xizhi's calligraphy and "Lanting Xiuyu", as well as literary works. The exhibition focuses on various important versions of the Orchid Pavilion Preface that have been passed down or copied by later generations.

Exhibits related to cherry blossoms are presented in various exhibition halls of the museum. In addition to the paintings of the famous ukiyo-e artist Toyokawa Toyokoku and others, there are also porcelain, fabrics, screens and other utensils related to cherry blossoms. Paintings on display include Toyokuni Utagawa's "View of Shin-Yoshiwara Cherry Blossoms", Kano Nagagaku's "Maigakuto Screen", and Okumura Masanobu's "A Boy Riding a Horse Under the Cherry Blossoms".

Lemnschneider and Alabaster sculpture in the Late Middle Ages

In the 14th and 16th centuries, alabaster was revered for its luster and ability to handle details. Glittering stones were used for altars and small sculptures, as well as tombs. Despite the abundance of surviving works, medieval alabaster sculptures from continental Europe have not been valued by museums in Europe and North America. The exhibition aims to shed light on this important but understudied topic by collecting some of the most extraordinary snow works surviving on the European continent, showcasing the work of German sculptor Menschneider and his contemporaries.

Hokusai: inspiration and influence

Exhibition period: March 26–July 16, 2023

Tell the story of this never-ending inventor and versatile Japanese artist in a whole new way, exploring his influence during his lifetime and beyond. More than 100 woodblock prints, drawings and illustrated books by Hokusai, as well as about 200 works by his teachers, students, competitors and admirers, are exhibited, juxtaposing to show his influence in time and space.

Exhibition of Drawings and Prints in the Collection: Innocence and Experience

Exhibition period: February 9 – May 16, 2023

The theme of the exhibition, "Innocence and Experience", is taken from the British writer William Blake's printmaking poem "Songs of Innocence and Experience", which focuses on prints and drawings by artists from the early Italian Renaissance, the late Georgian era in the United Kingdom, and European and American artists in the 19th century, reviewing the new ways in which artists recorded and shaped visual images.

New York Art World (1870-1890)

Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Exhibition period: December 12, 2022–October 29, 2023

Set in New York City in the 70s and 80s of the 19th century, the exhibition investigates the modern art scene in New York after the Civil War, exposing the life of artists during the period of social and economic change through about 50 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and decorative crafts, and showing the aesthetic trends and innovations of modern art in the United States in the late 19th century.

Pleasing luxury: Chinese lacquerware art

Location: Asian Art Museum of San Francisco

The exhibition is divided into two sections, "Tradition and Technology" and "Symbols and Forms", and displays a total of 27 pieces of Chinese lacquerware in the museum's collection, including court treasures, literati supplies, luxury goods, furniture, etc., clearly and richly presenting the unique luxury and beauty of Chinese lacquerware to the audience.

Anyang: The royal capital of ancient China

This is the first large-scale exhibition in the United States to be held with the theme of "Anyang Yin Market", and it is one of the activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Asian Art Museum. The exhibition displays more than 200 cultural relics, covering various categories such as jade, ceremonial vessels, weapons, wine vessels, musical instruments, carriages and horse harnesses, etc., showing the archaeological achievements of the ancient Chinese Shang Dynasty in terms of writing, rituals, sacrifices, tombs and artifacts.
