Some time ago, Xiaopeng P5 opened the VPA-L parking lot memory parking function of high-end models through OTA, which can park in the designated parking space according to the parking route set by the user in advance after entering the underground parking lot. Compared with the VPA function of xiaopeng P7 that we tested last year, the VPA-L of Xiaopeng P5 has 3 upgrade points:

1. Support cross-floor memory parking in underground parking lot, and support route length increase to 2km;

2. Open lidar for the first time, the perception ability is stronger, and the safety of over-bending is improved;

3. Support for memorizing route sharing and searching for parking spaces along the way (the latest OTA version of P7 also adds the same function).

So, what is the actual experience of using VPA-L? Can it cope with the complex environment in the parking lot? In order to figure out the answer to the question, we decided to set it up a special test. In order to increase the difficulty and restore the actual use scenario, we also set up 8 challenges in this test, which can pass several challenges.

Challenge 1: Go down two levels in a row

Turn on the function at -2F, pass two downhills in a row until you park the designated parking space on -4F, which is no difficult for VPA-L and passes smoothly.

Challenge 2: Underground Gate

In addition to the gate to enter the parking lot, this parking lot has a gate between -3F and -4F, although the pop-up menu of the car machine before remembering the route will remind you that the gate cannot appear in the route, but in the actual test process, we found that it has the ability to deal with the "gate in the gate" independently.

The VPA-L function of the Xiaopeng P5 not only smoothly passes through the narrow road planned by the green columns on both sides of the gate, but also automatically stops and waits after the vehicle recognizes the railing, and resumes driving after lifting the pole. The whole process can be called "old driver", and the steady performance surprised everyone present.

Challenge Three: Disappearing Obstacle Car

When memorizing the route, we arranged a stationary obstacle car on the road, resulting in a large turn avoidance in the memory route. When using memory parking, we remove the obstacle car and the VPA-L is able to automatically "smooth" the route without major turns.

Challenge Four: Vehicles travel

During the implementation of memory parking, we arranged a car to cross from the front, and the Xiaopeng P5 was able to brake and wait in time, judging that there was enough driving space to turn to avoid and continue driving.

Challenge Five: Vehicle Retrograde

In the face of the reverse car, the reaction of the Xiaopeng P5 is basically the same as when facing the vehicle crossing, all of which are stopped and waited, judging that there is enough driving space before turning to avoid and continue driving.

During the avoidance process, the VPA-L allows the vehicle to run in a crimped line, without being particularly rigid, and is basically in line with human driving operations.

Challenge Six: Pedestrians walk through

In the face of pedestrians passing through, VPA-L can be identified in advance and stop steadily.

(In order to ensure the personal safety of colleagues, we did not test pedestrians who ran and rushed out)

Challenge Seven: Paper Cup Marking

When memorizing the route, we marked the driving route with a paper cup on the straight road after the corner, and when the memory parking was performed, the vehicle could not accurately pass the route of the memory, but shifted about 30-40cm to the outside of the bend, and the preliminary judgment should be related to the cornering strategy, VPA-L will actively increase the turning radius and reduce the blind spot when turning.

Challenge Eight: Super difficult parking

At the end of the test route, we arranged a parking space where human drivers had to hit 3-4 to park well, and VPA-L hesitated for a few seconds to this, opted out, and the challenge failed.

In this test, we still have two functions that we have no chance to try, one is 100 meters remote control parking, the last 100 meters of the memory route Driver can get out of the car and hold the button of the mobile phone to complete the final parking steps. This function needs to be done through the mobile app, but this time we did not get authorization.

The second feature is memory route sharing, which is very practical and imaginative, especially suitable for finding charging stations or mall entrances and exits for underground parking lots. The follow-up Xiaopeng will meet the conditions of the underground self-operated supercharging station in advance to do a good job of memory parking routes, with VPA function of Xiaopeng models into the parking lot can use memory parking automatically find the charging station.
