Sources said LG Display has proposed to LG Home Entertainment, LG Electronics' TV business unit, a TV with a 55-inch transparent OLED panel. The panel will be fixed to the TV like a traditional TV, rather than being pull-in and pull-out like LG's scrollable OLED TVs.
LG Home Entertainment is planning to continue reviewing the proposal, the person said. If approved by the business, development work may begin in the second half of 2022 and become commercially available in 2023, and LG Display may offer transparent OLED panels with tempered glass overlays.
LG Electronics has now offered transparent OLED products such as billboards, which were launched by its Business Solutions business unit, but never a single product for the home.
IT Home learned that Xiaomi launched a transparent OLED TV with an 55-inch panel of LG Display in 2020, priced at up to 49999 yuan, and LG Display may have made this proposal to diversify its OLED TV panel portfolio.
According to analyst firm Omdia, shipments of OLED TVs increased 80 percent from the previous year to 6.53 million units last year. LG Electronics is the largest shipper with 4.05 million units. At the same time, LG Display produced 8 million OLED panels.
