LG will transfer OLED devices in preparation for iPad screen production

LG is said to be reconfiguring an OLED production line to meet Apple's needs, a development that could be aimed at making oled iPads. As apple's supplier, LG Display is said to be moving some OLED-related manufacturing equipment and tools from the E5 production line at its plant in Gumi, South Korea, to another in Paju.

The transferred project is thought to include a tensioner for depositing OLED materials, mainly for aligning metal masks during the deposition process.

According to The Elec sources, this transfer is risky and rarely done due to the risk of damage during transport, as well as the lengthy calibration process that characterizes the production line. The transfer is likely to be for the production of OLED panels intended for future iPad models.

This isn't the first time LG Display's factory has been linked to the OLED display of the iPad or iPad Air. On January 17, another report said LG had plans to expand OLED production at its Paju plant in the hope of producing iPad displays.

There have been many rumors about OLED on the iPad, including how the project to make panels for the iPad Air through Samsung was canceled in September 2021 due to cost, brightness and durability issues. By January, the project was allegedly revived, and Samsung was then working on how to reduce costs. In this particular case, however, it may be prepared for the OLED iPad released in 2024.

While the OLED iPad display may be tempting for potential users, it may not yet become a reality. In October, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would continue to use TFT-LCD technology in the iPad in 2022, in part because the advent of the OLED iPad Air could be detrimental to the sales of the Mini-LED 11-inch iPad Pro.
