It can promote the functional development of children in various fields; improving children's language, social, intellectual and other aspects of ability is the most direct and effective way for autistic children to recover. Parents should insist on training their children to intervene!

With the continuous deepening of research on autism, I believe we will get closer and closer to the truth.

The content of this article comes from Professor Zou Xiaobing's public welfare live lecture "Re-understanding Autism" at the "Nandu Health Lecture Hall"

Some time ago, a mother shared Professor Zou Xiaobing's public lecture in the Nandu Health Lecture Hall last year in the Warm Star community, and felt that she was very beneficial after watching it, and also did the content collation. Xiaoxing is here to release, I hope that in the understanding of autism, can be helpful to everyone, but also thank this studious mother for sharing ~ ~

Q1

Is autism a rare disease?

Until the 1980s, autism was considered a rare disease.

In 2020, the prevalence of autism released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reached 1:54, while the mainland's autism prevalence survey data is at least 1%, that is, at least 1 in 100 children, at least 1 autism, so autism is not a rare disease.

Q2

Is autism a psychosis?

70 years ago, people did not know about autism, and everyone regarded autistic children as child schizophrenics.

However, in 2013, the American Mental Illness Classification and Diagnostic Criteria issued by the American Psychiatric Association and the International Classification of Diseases issued by the World Health Organization both pointed out that autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Although autism can cause psychiatric comorbidities, such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, depressive disorders, etc., in essence, autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, while psychosis is due to certain stimuli, and the function of the brain nerves is confused.

Q3

Is autism a serious disorder?

The excessive transmission of online information about the severity of autism has led to great anxiety among parents.

In fact, autism includes severe, moderate, and mild. Zou Xiaobing told everyone in the lecture that about 70% of autism is mild, only the core disorder of autism exists, and intelligence and language are normal. No matter what degree of autism, as long as scientific intervention is carried out in time, different degrees of improvement can be obtained.

Mild autism can also be well integrated into society and live independently through scientific intervention. Moderate children can turn mild after scientific intervention. Severe autism depends on age, if diagnosed at the age of three or more, timely intervention can also be improved.

In short, through scientific intervention, the severity can not be severe, but if it is not detected in time and intervened, the mild will also turn to severe.

Q4

4:1 ratio of men to women with autism?

Zou Xiaobing pointed out in the lecture that the ratio of men and women with autism is 2:1, and female autism may not be diagnosed because it is "hidden".

Women are generally not as active as men, the representation is not as prominent as men, and most culture requires women to be gentle and quiet, so when women have social barriers, they are ignored and missed.

Q5

Autism rarely has genius ability?

Zou Xiaobing believes that about 10% of autistic people have special abilities, and they are far more than ordinary people.

Another aspect of narrow interests and repetitive stereotypes is "attachment". When attachment is applied to meaningful work, it is possible to contribute.

Maybe some people think that special abilities are useless. However, if our education helps them to discover and develop, intervene in their behavior, emotions, social skills, etc., and let their strengths be developed, then their special abilities can become their future career direction.

Q6

Is autism disabled?

Autism is a disability that coexists with neurological diversity.

On the mainland, perhaps 2,000 years ago, if a child is diagnosed with autism, it is likely to become a "disability". But as our level of awareness of autism and our ability to intervene increases, more and more patients are improving through scientific interventions.

In 2018, the World Health Organization set the theme of that year's Autism Day as "Embracing Neurodiversity." Appeal to everyone not to casually treat autistic people as disabled.

They are just not the same, can be seen as a kind of neuro diversity, and it is precisely because everyone is different that the world is diverse and colorful.

Q7

Are people with autism the same?

People stereotype autism, like we think snow is white. But in fact, just as every snowflake is different, every autistic person is also different.

Although they have common characteristics - social impairments, there are many differences: some children are flexible, some are slow, some children do not speak much, and some talk endlessly.

In the study, autism can be divided into eight broad categories:

●Normal intelligence and basically normal language;

● Backward intelligence, basically normal language;

● Normal intelligence, language backwardness;

● Backward intelligence, backward language;

● Normal intelligence, almost no language;

● Intellectual backwardness, almost no language;

● Specific autism, symptomatic grouping;

●Non-specific autism, indistinguishable;

Therefore, since they are different, our parents do not need to think of all the problems as the worst. For different, there are different mentalities and coping strategies. Because your mentality also affects the growth of children.

Q8

Is autism related to environmental factors?

At present, there is insufficient evidence to prove that autism is related to environmental factors such as vaccination, environmental pollution, infection during pregnancy, maternal medication during pregnancy, maternal obesity, nutritional deficiencies in infants and young children, mental injury in children, electronic radiation, child stress, and only children.

However, if the parents are older and the preterm birth is very low birth weight (less than 1500 g), the probability of autism may increase, but only a very small number of cases can be explained, and the conclusion is not yet available.

Regarding the increase in incidence, most scientists agree that it is because everyone's level of understanding and the level of diagnosis of doctors have improved, and in the past, cases of misdiagnosis as ADHD, intellectual disability, etc., according to the current diagnostic criteria, they know that their core obstacle is social communication, which is divided into autism.

Q9

Is autism caused by improper parenting by parents?

In the 1950s and 1960s, the "refrigerator mother" theory, which held that autism was caused by the indifference and improper parenting of mothers, made many mothers suffer from injustice, endured a lot of mental pressure, and even some mothers chose to end their lives by suicide, and this period also became the dark Middle Ages in the history of autism.

Since then, studies have proved that autism has nothing to do with parenting, and is the result of a combination of innate genes and the acquired environment, of course, genes are the main factor.

Q10

Is autism entirely genetically caused?

A professor at the University of London has developed a model to illustrate the relationship between genes and autism.

This model suggests that a child is born with an ASC gene susceptibility, and if it is because the gene is highly mutated and directly leads to autism, this process is difficult to intervene in. Most of these autisms are symptomatic autism, such as fragile X syndrome.

【Daily science popularization】Zou Xiaobing: "Debunking rumors" 11 autism misunderstandings, let's learn!

But more often, children with ASC gene susceptibility have signs of autism that do not see, do not refer to, should not, and do not say in the early stages, and are unwilling to interact with adults, and low social interest may lead to adults not interacting with children over time. As your child gets older, the risk of developing autism increases.

If this is the case, we can do some early intervention to prevent it. For example, intensive interaction with children and not letting children play alone can play a good improvement effect, and even do not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism.

For children over one year old, if there are signs of autism, even if they are not diagnosed, some intervention should be done early in the family. After all, missed diagnoses are much more costly than misdiagnoses.

Q11

Can autism be treated?

In the past, when it came to autism, everyone thought that it was "untreatable", but more and more clinical cases showed that early detection and early scientific intervention can achieve a good prognostic effect of autism.

Professor Zou Xiaobing even proposed that if it can be detected early in the early stage (about 1 year old) and intervened, it is possible to prevent children from developing obvious autism by three or four years.
