In 2021, the mainland new energy vehicle market will enter a stage of explosive growth. According to the data, last year, the wholesale volume of new energy passenger cars in the mainland reached 3.312 million units, and the market penetration rate reached 15.7%, an increase of nearly 10 percentage points over the penetration rate of 5.8% in 2020.

In the eyes of the outside world, the process of new energy vehicles seizing the market share of fuel vehicles in 2021 is accelerating. However, instead of "grabbing", it is better to say that the fuel vehicle OEMs have taken the initiative to "give" market share to new energy vehicles.

Last year, the global auto market was shrouded in the haze of "lack of core", domestic and foreign car companies are facing the dilemma of "lack of core" production or production reduction, due to the "lack of core" idle market, for the new forces of car manufacturing and other independent new energy vehicle brands to bring room to play. In addition, driven by the "double integral" policy, fuel vehicle companies have also supplied more chips to their new energy vehicles to ensure the market supply of new energy vehicles.

From the sales data, the new energy passenger car market in 2021 shows a "dumbbell type" sales structure, and A00-class and B-class pure electric vehicles contribute the most to the annual sales of new energy vehicles. According to the data of the Association, in 2021, the cumulative sales of A00-class pure electric vehicles will be about 898,500 vehicles, accounting for 30.1%; the cumulative sales of B-class pure electric vehicles will be about 616,000 units, accounting for 20.6%.

This is mainly due to the sales growth of A00-class electric vehicles represented by the above-mentioned Auto-GM-Wuling Hongguang MINIEV and B-class electric vehicles represented by BYD Han EV and Xiaopeng P7. According to public data, in 2021, Hongguang MINIEV sold about 426,500 vehicles in the whole year, accounting for nearly half of the domestic A00-class pure electric vehicle market; bydieHan EV cumulative sales of about 117,700 vehicles; Xiaopeng P7 cumulative delivery of about 60,600 vehicles.

In contrast, the sales volume of A0-class and A-class pure electric vehicles is relatively low, which is quite different from the sales structure of traditional fuel vehicles "spindle type", and the mainstream mass market still lacks strong pure electric vehicle models.

The rapid growth of A00-class pure electric vehicle sales has made more consumers aware of and accept new energy vehicles, and boosted the large-scale promotion of new energy vehicles in third- and fourth-tier cities and below in mainland China. However, with the maturity of the domestic new energy vehicle market and the trend of upgrading automobile consumption, the market volume of A00-class pure electric vehicles in 2022 may tend to stabilize, and the growth rate will also slow down.

Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Vehicle Market Information Association, believes that the A00-class new energy vehicle market will maintain growth this year, but the growth rate will not be too fast; the increase in the new energy vehicle market in 2022 will be mainly reflected in the A-class car and B-class car market represented by BYD.

At present, the industry's sales forecast for new energy vehicles this year is more than 5 million, and the association has raised its sales expectations for domestic new energy vehicles in 2022 to 6 million, and it is expected that the annual market penetration rate of new energy vehicles will reach about 22%.

With the "carbon neutrality" goal proposed, new energy vehicles are accelerating the replacement of fuel vehicles, and the future market structure of new energy vehicles in the mainland will also accelerate from "dumbbell type" to "spindle type" optimization. Next, mainland new energy vehicles are expected to achieve a breakthrough in the mainstream mass market in the price range of about 150,000 yuan.
