The western section of the strait is meandering and narrow, with a width of 48 kilometers at the entrance and only 3.3 kilometers at its narrowest point, with a deep water depth of 1170 meters. The rocky banks on both sides are steep and towering, and in winter, huge glaciers hang from the rock walls, which are spectacular, and whenever the falling ice falls into the sea, it will make a thunderous noise and threaten the navigation of the ship. The eastern section is open and shallow, the shallowest part of the main channel is only 20 meters, the two sides are green grassy grassland landscape, the strait is in the west wind belt of more than 50 degrees south latitude, the strong and full of water vapor west wind not only brings low temperature, rain and thick fog to the strait area, but also causes strong winds and rapid waves, which is a world-famous fierce wind and wave strait, which is not conducive to the development of shipping. The eastern end of the isthmuth starts from Cape Verheness and Cape Espírito Santo in Argentina on the Atlantic coast, and reaches Cape Pelle on the island of DeSoracion in Chile in the west to enter the Pacific Ocean. The famous port of Punta Arenas is located on the Brunque Peninsula in the Antarctic region of Chile and is a container port for Chilean lamb. Because the Portuguese navigator Magellan, with the support of the Spanish government, first entered the Pacific Ocean through this strait from October 21 to November 28, 1520, it was named "Strait of Magellan".
