【About the Author】

Liu Zongyuan (773-819), also known as Liu Zongyuan (773-819), was a native of Hedong (present-day Yuncheng, Shanxi), one of the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties, known as Liu Hedong (柳河東), and han yu (汉愈) as "Han Liu". Liu Zongyuan supported Han Yu's "Ancient Literature Movement", and his works were many essays, discourses, and fables, including more than 600 articles such as the Eight Records of Yongzhou, which were collected into thirty volumes of liuhe dongji.

(1) River snow: Snow falls on the river. Jiang, here refers to the Xiang River. (2) Ten thousand paths: virtual fingers, refers to tens of millions of small roads. (3) Trace: Trace. (4) 蓑蓑: 蓑衣與笠 hat, generally woven from grass, bamboo or hemp, used by woodcutters or fishermen to shield them from the wind and rain.

【Translation】

There are no birds on all the mountains, and no signs of people walking on all the roads.

In the lonely boat sat an old man in a man's robe, fishing alone on the cold river in the midst of snow and wind.

【Appreciation】

This poem is a landscape poem written by Liu Zongyuan after he was demoted to Yongzhou, and is one of his masterpieces. In this poem, the poet depicts a desolate, lonely scene and portrays an old man fishing alone in the snow and wind. The poet compares himself to the image of this isolated old man, embodying his fearless spirit. The first two sentences of the poem focus on the natural environment, and the last two sentences focus on people. The scenery of the snow and wind, the extinction of people and birds is in stark contrast with the old man who is wearing a cloak and wearing a bucket hat, which gives people a sense of detachment and paints a wonderful picture of solo fishing on the Han River. It is very appropriate to say in the "Essence of Tang Dynasty Absolute Sentences" that "this poem has a chill when it is read, so it is recited endlessly in ancient and modern times".
