The Kingdom of Songhai: The final act of the three kingdoms of West Africa

The ancient kingdom of West Africa, also known as the Kingdom of Songgayi, originated in Dengdi, south of Gao, and was founded by the Songhai people around the middle of the 7th century.

In the 11th century, the capital was moved to Gao. In 1325, Mali captured Gao, and the Kingdom of Songhai became its vassal state. After the middle of the 14th century, it gradually gained independence.

During the reign of Sonny Ali from 1464 to 1492, he changed his title to Great King and captured the rich areas of the middle reaches of the Niger River, such as Timbuktu and Diene.

In 1493, the general Dur seized the throne and the Aschian dynasty was raised. Dürr developed production, carried out reforms, unified weights and measures, established a standing army, encouraged scholarship, and brought the empire to its peak, with its territory stretching west to the lower Senegal River, east to the Plateau of Eyre, north to Tagazza in the Sahara, and south to Segou. Agriculture and textile industry are developed. Serfdom prevailed. The culture has reached a very high level, and there are libraries and universities in the country.

At the end of the 15th century, the Kingdom of Songhai began to transition to a feudal society.

After the 16th century, civil unrest occurred, the country's power gradually declined, and slaves and serfs continued to revolt. From 1590 to 1591, Morocco invaded and the Kingdom of Songhai fell.
