Which country outside of China has the most Chinese?
Thailand has the largest number of ethnic Chinese, about 9,300,000, but they claim to be Thai rather than Chinese. I'm one of them. This is because the Thai Chinese are so integrated into Thai society that they become part of Thai culture (basically cultural influences). About 13% of Thailand's population is of Chinese descent, and about 40% of them are of some Chinese descent.
Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, Bangkok
Malaysia has the second largest number of ethnic Chinese, at around 6,712,000. They also consider themselves Malaysians rather than Chinese, but they are closer to their roots than Chinese Thais. About 23% of the Malaysian population is of Chinese descent
Tianhou Temple, Kuala Lumpur
Indonesia is juxtaposed with Malaysia, with a Chinese population of about 6,500,000-7,600,000. Just like the Thais, the Chinese in Indonesia are largely integrated into Indonesian culture. Benny Jan says there are 15 million Chinese in Indonesia if you count mixed marriages with locals.
Vihara Kannon on Madura Island
The Number of Chinese Americans in the United States ranks third, at about 4,143,982. Compared to Thais, Malays and Indonesians, they believe that Chinese the most. However, they make up only 2% of the U.S. population.
Other candidates are:
In Singapore, the Chinese population is 2.571 million, accounting for 76% of Singapore's population.
In Canada, there are 1,769,195 People of Chinese descent, accounting for 5.1% of the Canadian population.
Myanmar, with 16-3 million Chinese, accounts for 3-5% of the Myanmar population.
Philippines, 1.35 million Chinese, 1.3% of the total population (although there may be more Filipinos of Chinese ancestry)
Australia, with a population of 1,213,903 Chinese, or 5.6% of the total population
Thais, Malays, Indonesians, Singaporeans, Burmese and Filipinos tend to be Chinese from the south (Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese and Hokkien), while American and Australian Chinese come from more diverse backgrounds.
