The UK Environment Agency confirmed that the Hualong Pressurized Water Reactor (UK HPR1000) is suitable for construction in the UK, subject to the necessary permits, planning and environmental permits, as well as an in-depth assessment of the nuclear reactor design.
The UK HPR1000 is based on the Hualong No. 1 power plant designed by China General Nuclear Power Group.
The UK Environment Agency said it had completed a rigorous assessment of UKHPR1000 and concluded that it was able to meet the high standards expected. That is why the design acceptability statement for the UK HPR1000 was issued to the design partners of China General Nuclear Power, EDF and General Nuclear Power International Co., Ltd.
In this project, EDF is responsible for two-thirds of the project and one-third for General Nuclear Power.
