Ezhou Huahu Airport Project
In August 2018, the Jingchu land was shining brightly, overlooking from a high hill in Ezhou, the fish ponds were dotted with dots, the paddy fields were long and narrow, and a large lake was sparkling.
Now, two main runways stretch straight here, and in the distance, the tower of the airport's iconic building stands tall – Asia's first major cargo hub airport. Filling in the foundation, moving the mountain, building a tower, building a building, the project team of the Infrastructure Investment Company of the Third Bureau of China Construction Bureau overcame difficulties and staged a touching story.

It is adjacent to the golden waterway of the Yangtze River, and there are major traffic arteries such as the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway and the Shanghai-Chongqing expressway passing through, which is an ideal place to build a cargo airport. At the same time, the water system here is dense, the mountains are undulating, and the project construction personnel need to carry out water treatment and field leveling operations in an area of 11.84 square kilometers, and all local drainage consolidation, in the main lake area of 958,900 square meters, the average thickness of silt is 5 meters, and the deepest depth is 17 meters. The Zoma Lake water system treatment project is the premise of all follow-up projects.

Drainage consolidation, that is, after the silt has solidified, layered backfill compaction is carried out. More than a dozen processes, 11 layers of filling, runways and other key parts to increase the overload of 6 meters high, only the second and third work areas of the earth and stone volume reached 8.44 million cubic meters, equivalent to 10 football fields piled up 40 stories high.

The project also established three major information platforms, through the installation of positioning devices and sensors, boldly explore "unmanned", "unmanned monitoring" and "intelligent pumping", etc., to achieve digital supervision of more than 600 operating equipment. At present, the first standard project of Zouma Lake has been handed over first, which has opened the curtain for the construction of the main project of the airport.

In order to take off, the aircraft must have suitable clearance conditions, there are 3 mountains at the south end of the west runway outside the airport, and the mountain with the main peak of 146 meters must be cut into a sloped terrain with a minimum point of 23.5 meters and a maximum point of 67.4 meters.
As the saying goes, it is like a mountain, but the project team says: if the mountain does not go, the mountain will be moved! When all the airport projects were gradually taking shape, only three mountains were gradually disappearing.

The "moving mountain" earthworks amounted to 49 million tons and took only 166 days to complete, which means that an average of more than 290,000 tons must be dug up every day. Among them, more than 500,000 tons are more than 500,000 tons for 18 days, and 10,000 vehicles of earth and stone are pulled per day according to the 50 tons of load per vehicle. This is an earthwork project that has never been seen in the history of Ezhou City.

In only two days and two nights, the project rushed to build a 15-meter-wide and 800-meter-long uphill road, and in two months, a 12-meter-wide and 4.1-kilometer-long outer transport road was rushed to build, which opened the door for the rapid start of the project and efficient production.
How much soil does each vehicle carry? The project uses the smart weighing room system to automatically count the vehicle driving, license plate and load capacity, reducing the road congestion and safety hazards caused by traditional weighing, and greatly improving work efficiency. At the same time, through three-dimensional aerial survey calculations, the project team "cut the peaks and filled the valleys" of the mountain, and processed the soil and stones on the spot to reduce the load of the earthworks.

In this way, the project management team with an average age of less than 33 years old organized more than 1,500 construction machinery such as excavators and transport vehicles, and people stopped non-stop - the mountain was moved away by them unconsciously!
Digital tower blooms the world's largest "Lamei"
The shape is inspired by the tower of Hualamei in Ezhou City, which is the tallest building in the airport, with a height of 89 meters, and is also the airport command brain. At present, the construction of the tower has entered the completion acceptance stage.

The shape of the tower "Lamei" as a whole has six petal-shaped symmetry - the concrete core tube with a diameter of 10 meters is the "flower stem", and the expanded steel structure "vein" plus the hyperbolic curtain wall forms a "petal" with a diameter of 23.5 meters. There are two major difficulties in the project: ensuring the verticality and surface flatness of the "flower stem", and the hoisting and installation of the "petals". The project team adopts mature climbing mold technology, customized six giant steel templates for splicing, and ensures that the distance from the steel mold to the center of the circle can ensure verticality at each climb, so that the "flower stem" forms a standard circle.

The upper curtain wall of "petals" is a single curved surface, no piece of glass is the same, the project team measured the actual quantity one by one, and then customized production and hoisted in place after one numbering. For the lifting of steel structures with limited sites, the project team optimized the design, decomposed the steel components, and then used the tower crane to connect in the air, and finally achieved air positioning.
What is less well known is that the air traffic control tower and its supporting facilities are not only the "highest" projects in the airport, but also the "widest" projects in scope. The project has a total of 8 individual projects, including the air traffic control tower of "Stars Holding the Moon", two field monitor radars in the east and west, a weather radar, a secondary radar station in Bamiao Village of Huahu, and 3 off-site navigation stations distributed in Tuanfeng County of Huanggang and Daye City of Huangshi.

Lean building to create an efficient "smart construction site"
Terminals, cargo terminals and related supporting projects are the main part of the airport. The construction area of the terminal building is about 15,000 square meters, and the construction area of the freight station is about 23,000 square meters.

The steel structure roof of the terminal building is a large-span steel truss, with high construction accuracy requirements; the glass curtain wall has a wide range, a large area, and contains more glass curtain wall lighting roofs; the freight station project is more than 8 meters high per floor, and the construction risk of tall formwork is larger; the key parts are widely distributed, and the construction progress of various professions and cross-construction have a greater impact...

The project team set up a smart site platform, including digital site management system, digital monitoring management system, digital precision measurement, etc., to establish an integrated project management platform to achieve professional, platform-based and information-based management.

The project uses bim modeling of the whole process, and technicians and construction personnel can guide the construction through mobile phones or tablets. Shu Hongbin, chief engineer of project technology, said: "The lashing of each steel bar and each process in the model are clear at a glance, so as to achieve full coverage of construction, electromechanical, steel structure, weak current and other professions, and achieve the management goal of 'full stage, full profession, full business, full participation'. ”

The achievement also applies the quality inspection and evaluation system, hooks the BIM model component package into the corresponding inspection batch, and achieves the whole process traceability of when, where, who and what process is achieved by taking real photos for comparison. At present, the BIM achievements of the series of projects have won the third prize of the national "Innovation Cup", the first prize of the comprehensive application category of the Hubei Provincial Construction Engineering BIM Competition, the second prize of the 12th "Innovation Cup" BIM Application Competition Engineering Construction Special BIM Application Award, and the honorary nomination award of the BSI Global OpenBIM Grand Prix.
The project has hosted 7 on-site observation meetings, welcomed more than 200 surveys at all levels, and won praise from airport owners many times. The tower project and the terminal project were both awarded the "Wudu Cup" at the safe and civilized construction site of Ezhou City, the terminal project was awarded the "Chutian Cup" at the safe and civilized construction site in Hubei Province, and the party branch of the series of projects was awarded the advanced grass-roots party organization in Hubei Province in 2021, becoming the "double pioneer" of engineering construction and spiritual civilization construction.
