The case reached the trial stage. The public prosecution charged Lu Rongdian with causing death by negligence. Lu Rongdian did not disagree with the charges, but believed that he had surrendered himself and compensated the victim's family, and was forgiven, hoping that the court would sentence him to a suspended sentence.

The People's Court of Shaodong City, Hunan Province, ascertained at trial that the defendant Lu Rongdian knew that the responsible soil for placing the trap was often passed by by villagers, and still failed to take safe and effective preventive measures or set up warning signs to remind him, and was negligent and causing death, and his behavior has constituted the crime of causing death by negligence.

After the incident, the family of defendant Lu Rongdian compensated the relatives of the victim Shu for economic losses of 110,800 yuan on their behalf. The relatives of the victims expressed forgiveness for the defendant Lu Rongdian's conduct and requested a lighter punishment and a suspended sentence.

On January 7, 2022, after investigation and assessment, the Shaodong Municipal Community Corrections Administration recommended that community corrections be applied to defendant Lu Rongdian.

Taking into account the above circumstances, on January 17, 2022, the court convicted defendant Lu Rongdian of causing death by negligence and sentenced him to two years' imprisonment with a suspended sentence of three years.
