On February 1, 2020, four special forces officers of the Russian Special Purpose Center were killed during a combat mission near the Syrian city of Aleppo, Major Bulat Akhmatyanov, Lieutenant Vsevolod Trofimov, Major Ruslan Gimadiev and Captain Dmitry Minov.

On that day, the extremist HTS and its subordinate foreign militant groups launched a massive offensive in the Al-Zahra area on the western outskirts of Aleppo in an attempt to engage in a beast-fighting battle in the event of a complete rout in the direction of Numan and Sarazib.

HTS first used large-caliber rockets and mortars to bomb forward positions in the Al-Zahra area (two Russian special forces soldiers died in the bombing), followed by a number of heavy armored self-detonating vehicles converted from BMP infantry fighting vehicles to attack the government's defenses, and finally sent an elite commando team composed of multinational militants to launch an attack. Two Russian special forces soldiers were killed in the ensuing battle.
