It was Chiang Kai-shek's resolute remarks that led to Zhang Xueliang, who had been imprisoned for 39 years, being imprisoned for another 15 years after Chiang Kai-shek's death.
Although Zhang Xueliang was placed under house arrest, Chiang Kai-shek did not treat him badly in terms of eating, drinking and having fun. Chiang Kai-shek said that Zhang Xueliang's expenses over the years could cover the military expenses of a regiment.
So why zhang Xueliang has been locked up for 39 years and is already old. Moreover, the cost of detaining Zhang Xueliang was huge, so why did Chiang Kai-shek not let him go? There are three reasons for this.
First, he hated Zhang Xueliang for challenging his authority and letting him lose his prestige.
Second, he hated Zhang Xueliang for launching the Xi'an Incident, which promoted the anti-Japanese united front, and finally made him a complete defeat.
Third, he hated Zhang Xueliang for never admitting mistakes, insisting that the Xi'an incident had done the right thing himself.
Chiang Kai-shek will not let Zhang Xueliang go until his death, in addition to hatred, he is also afraid, for fear that after Zhang Xueliang is released, he will burst out some insider information that damages his own image without any cover. Second, he was afraid that Zhang Xueliang would run back to the mainland, and he believed that Zhang Xueliang's yu wei still existed, and if he ran back to the mainland, it would still be very harmful to the island.
Hu Hanmin once made this comment about Chiang Kai-shek: Chiang Kai-shek is a narrow popularity, and his eyes will be rewarded. From the fact that Zhang Xueliang was not released until his death, it can also be seen that Chiang Kai-shek is indeed blind and will repay. Zhang Xueliang was imprisoned for 13 days during the Xi'an Incident, but he was imprisoned for 54 years.
