In May 1935, the Japanese puppet army of more than 15,000 people besieged the National Salvation Army in the areas of Maoshan, Shilipu and Wujiagou.
At dawn, the Japanese first destroyed the National Salvation Army positions with artillery fire, and the nearby villages were reduced to ashes. The enemy then launched a general attack with poison gas bombs and machine guns.

Sun Yongqin led the team with machine guns to directly attack the dense areas of the Japanese Kou, and personally killed Yuto and Sasaki, and repeatedly repelled the attacks of the Yamada team and the Matsui team, killing the Japanese lieutenant Tanabe and others.

Sun Yongqin was only 42 years old when he died. The heads of Sun Yongqin and Guan Yuanyou were cut off by the Japanese invaders for public display.
On August 1, 1935, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued the "Letter to All Compatriots for Resisting Japan and Saving the Country" (that is, the "August 1st Declaration"), calling Sun Yongqin a national hero of the Anti-Japanese Resistance.
