In the Liberation War, the 1st Column was one of the three fierce tiger armies of the Northeast Field Army, the first-class main force of the Four Wilds, and was famous for being good at fighting big battles and hard battles. The "Four Wars and Four Peaces" was the first famous battle of the 38th Army, and in the entire Liberation War, the 38th Army went all the way from the Banks of the Songhua River to Shanhaiguan and hit the border of Yunnan and Vietnam, fighting half of China.

After the end of the Liaoshen Campaign, in November 1948, the 1 column was renamed the 38th Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and then quickly entered the customs, participated in the Pingjin Campaign, served as the main attack of Tianjin, took the lead in breaking through the defense of Tianjin City, and captured Chen Changjie, the commander of the Tianjin Garrison, alive, becoming the second famous battle of the 38th Army.
