Yang Chengwu, born in 1914 in a poor peasant family in ZhangwupuXia Shecun, Changting County, Fujian Province, attended private school at home as a child, attended primary school, and later studied at Changting County Provincial No. 7 Middle School.
In 1928, he joined the Communist Youth League of China.
In January 1929, Yang Chengwu participated in the local armed rebellion in the ancient city of western Fujian, and joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, serving as the secretary of the Third Road Headquarters of the Red Army in western Fujian and the commander of the propaganda team.
In March 1930, he was incorporated into the Third Column of the Fourth Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and in the same year he joined the Communist Party of China.
In 1931, Yang Chengwu served as the secretary of the 12th Division of the Fourth Army, the political commissar of the company, and the political commissar of the teaching brigade.
In October 1934, he participated in the Long March, and after arriving in northern Shaanxi, he served as the political commissar of the Red First Division, which was headed by General Chen Geng.
