In 1962, Nie Fengzhi returned to the Nanjing Military Region as deputy commander of the military region and commander of the air force, becoming Xu Shiyou's deputy and Xu Shiyou's good helper. In 1977, Nie Fengzhi succeeded Ding Sheng as commander of the Nanjing Military Region. He was the third commander of the Nanjing Military Region after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

After years of hard fighting, Nie Fengzhi's body was devastated. In the 1970s, Nie Fengzhi was hospitalized many times to save his life. During his tenure as commander of the Nanjing Military Region, Nie Fengzhi was over sixty years old, and his health was getting worse and worse, and he could not even carry out normal work.
Before going to work in the morning, Nie Fengzhi must first get an injection, go home at noon and then inject glucose saline, take another injection in the afternoon to go to work, and come back in the evening to continue to inject glucose saline, many times, Nie Fengzhi fainted in the office. Nie Fengzhi is working with the spirit of playing with his life.
But he knew he was already powerless. Nie Fengzhi submitted three reports to the Central Committee on his resignation, and it was not until 1982 that the Central Committee approved Nie Fengzhi's retirement from the second line, and Xiang Shouzhi, deputy commander of the military region, took over as commander.
Nie Fengzhi, who had retreated to the second line, still insisted on attending the party group meeting. Even during his hospitalization, he wrote letters to the party group and kept in touch with it. Nie Fengzhi's trachea was cut open many times, slightly better, and he insisted on attending the party group meeting while wrapping gauze. In 1992, a generation of famous generals Nie Fengzhi died of illness at the age of 79.
