The Thirty-eighth Army in Korea (XI): Capture of Flying Tiger Mountain (Part 1)

In his book "The Thirty-Eighth Army in Korea," The founding major general, former deputy commander of the 38th Army, and acting general Jiang Yonghui recalled that the main force of our army has entered the south of the stadium and is ready to extend forward.

The Thirty-eighth Army in Korea (XI): Capture of Flying Tiger Mountain (Part 1)

The 112th Division became the vanguard of the whole army, and I followed the division into the wadong, where the division's command post was located in a railway tunnel near the tile cave that was nearly 200 meters long.

The enemy occupied the hill in front of us, threatening our security and preventing us from developing into the courtyard and the military corner.

I and the division commander political commissar studied and resolved to destroy the enemy in front of us, so that Fan Tianen, the commander of the 335 regiment, immediately came to accept the task, and after he received the telegram, he immediately came with the guards, and as soon as he saw me, he asked: "303, let me sleep for half an hour first!" ”

Without my permission, he leaned against the cave wall and snored, looking too tired.

It turned out that he had led his troops to search the mountains and advance, and had not slept for several days and nights, but the time on the battlefield was precious, and it was often decided within a minute.

I looked at his tired look and couldn't bear to wake him up, but I called him out of his slumber and gave him a new combat mission.

Fan Tian'en took a nap, suddenly got up, and demanded: "303, give me the task!" These days, there is no decent battle, and the soldiers are all red-eyed! ”

"Okay, take down the mountain opposite!"

Fan Tian'en personally commanded the 1st Company, and soon took the opposite hill, occupied the position, and inserted it into the courtyard.

In order to occupy the favorable terrain and cut off the enemy's retreat, we also ordered Fan Tianen to lead the whole regiment to capture feihu mountain and quickly attack the army corner, and Yang Dayi's division commander also moved with the regiment.

Flying Tiger Mountain stands like a giant monster on the north side of Junyu-ri and Gakugawa-gun, forming an equilateral triangle with Junyu-ri and Gakugawa-ri.

For the sake of the safety of Junyu-ri and Gakugawa, the enemy preemptively occupied The Flying Tiger Mountain, which was a transportation hub for both Junsugawa and Junsu-ri, with Shuncheon and Pyongyang in the south, Tokugawa and Gucheng River in the east, Kameseong and Sinuiju in the west, and Junyuri, Stadium, Xichuan, Jiangjie, and Manpo in the north.

The enemy is attacking the Yalu River, and the military corner is the place where it must pass, and the military corner is the supply station for the enemy to advance north.

When our army took control of the military corner, it was equivalent to getting stuck in the neck of the enemy who was entering the north, and also cutting off the enemy's way to escape south.

Therefore, our capture of Flying Tiger Mountain heralds the imminent beginning of a vicious battle.

The sudden entry of our volunteers into Korea was unexpected by MacArthur, and although he received information as soon as our army entered Korea, he did not want to believe it.

After the setbacks of Unsan and Wenjing, he woke up from the dream of destroying Korea, and he ordered the commander of the Air Force, Stratmeyer, to "eliminate the Chinese Intervention Army," and MacArthur said fiercely:

"If necessary, the combat crews will continue to fly as long as they survive ... and destroy all the enemy's transportation and all the facilities, factories, cities and villages" ... in a vain attempt to kill our army in one fell swoop.

MacArthur wanted to use air superiority to eliminate our army, and the enemy planes, day and night, began to bomb indiscriminately on both sides of the Yalu River, especially the cities and villages in the north, which suffered unprecedented disasters and turned into ruins.

The logistical supply of our army has also been seriously damaged; the grain, canned food, and ammunition brought from the motherland have been blown up by enemy planes, and a small number of grain and ammunition have been transported to the front; because the roads have been interfered with and damaged by enemy planes, they have not been able to replenish the troops in time.

The local people were also plundered by the enemy, and it was very difficult to raise money, most of them lacked food, and if they could eat boiled corn kernels, they would be able to live a good life.

When the 113th Division's subordinate unit was running out of food, the horses with their luggage were killed by enemy planes, and some of them wanted to cut the horse meat to eat.

This was a horse raised by Liu, a great old man who preferred to die before entering the dynasty, and although he was approved to join the volunteer army, because he was old and could not carry cooking utensils, he became a breeder.

He loved horses as if they were destined to die, and after the horses in his luggage were killed by enemy planes, he wept bitterly, and just at this moment, some people came to cut the flesh of the horses, and he took up a big stick to guard the dead horses, and he did not leave any step, saying to everyone: "The military horse is a wordless comrade-in-arms, it has fought with the troops in the south and the north, and has made meritorious contributions to the establishment of a new China, and whoever dares to cut its flesh to eat, I will fight with him!" ”

Everyone saw the serious look of the elder Liu, and they all sympathized with him very much, so they had to bury the horse in pain, and the elder Liu picked up the luggage burden again.

The interference of the enemy air force not only caused our food and ammunition supply to be untimely, but also made it difficult for the wounded to urgently need the dressing, so we had to propose to wash the used dressing and then use it.

Female nurses Hao Xiuzhi and Zang Fuying did the most prominently, using their rest time to wash the dressing in the cold stream and braving the strafing of enemy planes.

It was not a piece of two pieces, but a large number of bloody bandages, not a day or two, but a long year, cold and frozen, as soon as their hands reached into the ice water, they were in pain, but they gritted their teeth and insisted, a pair of delicate hands like blood stained, red and purple.

From time to time, the enemy planes came to make trouble, circling and strafing, they lay down to avoid, the enemy planes swirled past, they got up again to wash, intermittently, it took a long time to wash, therefore, they rarely had time to rest, but they used their diligence and fatigue to finally solve the difficulty of the dressings that could not be transported.

When the 335th Regiment accepted the task of attacking Feihu Mountain, it felt that there was a shortage of food and ammunition, especially food, continuous marching and fighting, and the dry food bags had long been empty, but no one was hungry and screaming, and they were all engaged in intense battle preparations.
