Unsurprisingly, the sales volume of new energy vehicles accounted for more than 90% again, and BYD's sales growth in 2021 can be said to be full of electricity, not only fast, but also durable, and can not be stopped at all.
In December, BYD's full passenger car sales totaled 97,990 units, up 77.9% year-on-year. Among them, the sales of new energy vehicles reached 92,823 units, an increase of 236.4% year-on-year, accounting for 94.73% of the overall sales.
In 2021, BYD's full line of passenger car sales was 730,093 units, an increase of 75.4% year-on-year, of which new energy vehicle sales were 593,745 units, an increase of 231.6% year-on-year, accounting for 81.32% of the overall sales.

From three consecutive declines to ten consecutive rises
Today's achievements are no accident for BYD, but they are by no means easy.
Before achieving the impressive performance in 2021, BYD experienced a painful three consecutive declines, from 2018 to 2020, BYD's overall sales and proud sales of new energy vehicles continued to decline. No one expected that the peak period brought by the second generation of Tang for BYD was so short, and no one expected that when the world's new energy vehicles just began to take off, it was BYD who fell behind first.
During this time, BYD was not only questioned, but also ceded the position of "the world's first new energy vehicle sales" that had remained for 4 years to Tesla in 2019.

Entering 2021, BYD finally began to erupt, and after the Spring Festival holiday in February, BYD ushered in ten consecutive increases in new energy sales and overall sales. The flagship sedan Han, which was launched in 2020, and the Qin PLUS DM-i, which was launched in March 2021, became the vanguard driving this wave of sales surges, and then new cars such as Tang DM-i, Song PLUS DM-i, and Dolphin were quickly in place, and the increments were continuous.
A number of outstanding models in the same year "retaliatory" listing, market feedback is extremely warm, there is even a shortage of supply in the market, Qin, Song series of DM-i models once as long as 3-4 months.
In the end, in 2021, BYD's pure electricity and plug-in two blossoms, with sales of pure electric vehicle models reaching 320,801 units and plug-in hybrid models reaching 272,935 units.
Among them, BYD Han sold 117,665 vehicles, the Tang series sold 54,204 vehicles, the Song series sold 200,870 vehicles, the Qin series sold 194,220 vehicles, the Yuan series sold 41,402 vehicles, and the e series sold 38,350 vehicles, which were only listed in August, and dolphins, which have been complained about by netizens at too high prices, have sold 29,598 vehicles.
BYD, which has been suppressed for 3 years, has finally proved its position as a "leader in new energy vehicles" with its strength again.

What did BYD do right?
From confusion to explosion, such a dramatic plot we can often see in the movie, the protagonist in the movie in the confused period of painstaking cultivation, experienced many tribulations, and finally broke out at the end. The same is true of BYD in reality, except that BYD's cultivation period began in 2003 when it first entered the automotive industry.
In 2003, BYD President Wang Chuanfu said:
"Doing electric vehicles is BYD's original intention to enter the automobile industry."
Although at that time he asserted that "BYD has sufficient capital and resource advantages, coupled with the flexible mechanism of private enterprises, it will not be very difficult to enter the field of electric vehicle production", and the subsequent goal of "China's first in 2015 and world first in 2025" is more or less a face of reality, but looking back at BYD's 19-year history of car manufacturing, BYD has done at least 3 things correctly:

The birth and development of new things is always accompanied by problems and doubts, and BYD has always been the tide of public opinion, it has countless controversies, but also harvested countless "Di fans".
In the past 13 years, we have also witnessed the continuous development of BYD technology, from reverse to self-research, from imitation to innovation. Whether it is just starting out or is now growing, BYD attaches enough importance to technology. Now in the exhibition hall of BYD's headquarters, we can see a patent wall that cannot be photographed by a wide-angle camera, and there are 8 big words written on it:
"Technology is king, innovation is the foundation".
From F3 DM to Qin DM, Tang DM, second-generation Tang DM, Song DM, and then to Han, Qin PLUS DM-i, Dolphin, with the blessing of generation after generation of new technologies, BYD's new energy vehicle products are becoming more and more competitive.
In this process, BYD has always insisted on self-made parts, whether it is the core components of fuel vehicles or the core components of electric vehicles, BYD must hold it in its own hands.
In the context of the globalization era a few years ago, such a practice is very "stupid", and even small parts and components need to invest sufficient financial resources and manpower to do a good job, and more or less disperse the funds and manpower that can be invested in the main business.
However, in today's era of epidemic + electrification, BYD is one of the few car companies in China that can take its fate into its own hands.
When other car companies are grabbing battery resources while also guarding against battery factory stores, BYD's 9 battery production bases across the country are steadily climbing production, not only self-sufficient, reducing the cost of models, reducing the terminal price, and inexpensive blade batteries will also be sold to the outside world. In 2021, when global car companies are in a chip shortage, BYD with some chip self-research and self-production capabilities is also one of the least affected traditional car companies.
There is no doubt that BYD's achievements today come from 13 years of persistence. Insisting on new energy has finally ushered in the outlet. Adhere to technological innovation, competitiveness steadily improved. Insisting on self-made parts, improving the cost performance also grasped their own destiny.

What else does BYD need to do?
Of course, as in the past 13 years, BYD still has many problems, and the more it is in a period of rapid rise, the more problems faced by enterprises will become more and more acute.
Nowadays, with dm-i series, Han, Dolphin and other strong products as a support, with the gradual release of production capacity, next year's BYD should soon be able to stand on the big step of 100,000 monthly sales, and the production and sales of 2022 exceeding one million is also a target that can be touched. However, behind the hot sales, the brand image, sales service and auxiliary driving ability that has been criticized for lagging behind the first-line level are still what BYD needs to improve rapidly.
In the case of more and more high-end brands incubated by traditional manufacturers such as WEY, Lynk & Co, lantu, etc., and in the case of the new car-making forces represented by Wei Xiaoli taking turns to impact the luxury brand automobile market, the bydd high-end brand that has been rumored for many years has not yet been seen.
For BYD at this stage, high-end brands should be the top priority. With sufficient technology accumulation, BYD needs to have a brand that can support higher prices in order to continue to improve the competitiveness of products in the high-end market, and then enhance the image and corporate image of BYD brands. High-end brands will determine whether BYD can take advantage of this new energy wind to fly to a new height.
In the past three years, BYD has experienced the pain of a brief climb to the top and then a rapid fall, and I hope that BYD today will know how to stand firm at a high place better than it did 3 years ago.
